Looking for .22 Recommendations

Hello all,

First off all, thanks for taking the time to click this post and read it, much appreciated.

I don't have nearly the amount of knowledge that most of y'all have in this forum so I figured this is the best place to ask.

I am looking for recommendations for a .22 bolt action rifle under $1000 cad for my farm. Groundhogs were a bit of a pest last year and I'd like to rid myself of as many as I possibly can. I'd also like to get into plinking because the seems like a ton of fun.

My options are limited I understand that but I will be using CCI quiet since animals and people are on the property all of the time.

The quieter the firearm is the better it is for me! I am aware that distance/accuracy does come at a cost.

If that means buying a firearm and chassis seperate so be it. Wouldn't be opposed to an air rifle if that's going to be the better route.

If you really want 'precision & accuracy', I'd suggest a CZ-457 with the MTR chamber. There are several models with that option, and if you shop carefully you may find one on EE or GP that will fall around your $1000 range. You'll want to spend about $3-400 for a 'decent' scope, again on EE or GP to save a Lot.
You could also go with a Tikka, if one appears on EE or GP but the price may exceed your $1k.
 
Another option is a Savage B-22, now running around $500-ish. Mine is almost as accurate as my CZ-457 VMTR with a matching scope as the VMTR. I get ca 1/2-inch groups at 50 yds and 1.5" at 100, with good SV ammo, which is pretty quiet but Not as much as "Quiets".
You're correct in wanting a Bolt, in that 1) semi will generally Not be as accurate and 2) semi 'popping open' to cycle lets out more sound too.
 
Tikka T1x. Specifically the 16” model. I have 2. Action is the smoothest 22 bolt I have ever used. Accurate enough to split playing cards at 50yards with boring regularity. Excellent trigger that can be further improved with a YoDave spring. Well under budget. Only needs an optic of your choice.
 
I've found the cci quiet 710fps to not be very good killers and aren't very accurate past 20yards. The 45gr cci quiet semi auto 835fps, cci suppressor 45gr 970fps, AE 45gr 970fps, Win suppressor 45gr 970fps are all a bit louder but kill much better and much more consistently accurate than cci quiet 710fps.
I have a jw15 Norinco with a 24 inch barrel it is very quiet even with the 970fps 45gr loads, and pretty accurate. Not a quality firearm by any means but it doesn't bother me to get it bloody. It's quieter than a 495fps pellet gun when shooting the quiets, the only thing I use the 710fps quiets for is killing coons in traps where I can ensure a brain shot from very close range.

IMO a long barreled 22 (the longer the better) paired with cci suppressor 45gr hp loads is the best option for discreetly killing pests humanely.

Yes, these kinds of questions will be helpful for giving a better informed answer.

If Quiets are the intended ammunition, semi's are eliminated. As pointed out earlier, Quiets aren't great for terminal performance, but the segmented Quiets are quiet effective (although not particularly accurate in guns I've tried it in).

I'm partial to CZ rimfire, having owned a handful of 457's and 452's. I kept the 452's, but the 457's were plenty accurate and the lower bolt throw was very handy. But again, that's just what suits me
 
I know a few fellows who had light primer strikes on their Savage 22lr bolt guns. Several threads at rimfirecentral. Something to be aware of (maybe).

I have had great experiences with CZ 452 and 457 models. I like the CZ Trainers with 24" barrels and the CZ Jaguar with 28" barrels. Both have nice iron sights ( if that is a consideration for OP), and take scopes as well. The long barrels are quiet on the shooters ears. I now lean to the 457 with the lower bolt throw as mentioned by Slinky.
Any CZ barrel length will be a practical and a fine choice , just personal preference. Tikka are nice as well and just as highly rated.
 
Under 1k is definitely doable with some quality firearms either used or new.

It really depends how deep down the rabbit hole you want to go! You could get a nice savage mark 1 btvs (thumb hole stainless heavy barrel.) you could get a cz457 various models or a tikka T1X

All there options I’ve seen shoot 1” groups at 100 yards with the right ammunition for the rifle. In my mind it depends how far down the rabbit hole (or maybe groundhog hole in this case) you really want to go.

I personally have a Tikka T1X and have shot out to 200 yards no issue (good scope required with travel.) An not at groundhogs just paper.

If you can try shouldering each rifle at a local store and decide which fits you best.

Hello there, I just want to say thank you to everyone for taking the time to come out and reply. I don't like to come off as ignorant, id rather make the right decisions the first time and not be kicking myself for not asking or using AI to help me decide.


For the vamrint side of things I'd say 50-60 yards max. I've read that quiets are only good up to about 30-40 yards on a good day, and if I find I can get closer to the groundhogs I will.
The problem is I have 20 horses outside at any given time in the paddocks around. (I won't be shooting in live paddocks, I'm not that skilled or crazy)
So mostly groundhogs, some mice and rats. I need to be quiet mainly for the horses and boarders/ship ins on the property.
I'd like to play around with distances also in my free time when plinking. I'd be using the same ammo. CCI quiet seems to be the way I will be going
