Greetings All

Ìhave a 7mm barrel blank I want to do a build with. My question is would it be better to build on rifle that was originally 30-06 or 270 in regards to magazine follower and feeding issues?

Thanks

If you look at the conversions that BSA did from WWI M1917, they did funky hour glass shaped grind to the feed lips in receiver - I think that was to allow hunting cartridges with round nose hunting bullets to "pop up" in time to chamber - or perhaps to chamber more easily - versus the pointy FMJ military bullets that the rifle was originally made for. I surmise that was an important thing to someone, at some time - angle /shape of feed ramp and guide rails, depending on shape of bullet used. However, my Dad "farmer sporterized" his M1917 in 1948 - never did anything with the feed rail guides - shot a bazillion deer, moose, elk and other things with it - 150 grain to 220 grain hunting bullets at various times - I am sure some of them were round nosed.

Personally, I wouldn't spend $4k on a build. Let someone else, then pick it up at a fraction when they move on to the new shiny toy.

I've had good luck with that on magnums. Literally buying rifles 20yrs old, with 18 of the first box of 20. Recoil intolerance. The flip side of that would be buying someone's PRS rifle. A target 6.5 creedmore from a competitor may have thousands of rounds through the barrel. To me 280ai says, hunter that walks. It may have very few actual rounds through it.

He won't be anywhere near 4k. He already has the barrel. He's looking at 500ish for chamber and barrel install and around $700 for the donor rifle. Although a ruger american wouldn't be my first choice due to the garbage factory stock and limited aftermarket support, he'll end up with a good shooting rifle in a great chambering.

Yeah just looking for a stainless back up rifle for my kimber. I'm investing in reloading and ammo. Makes sense to me to have 2.

Buy a used rifle in 30-06 or 270, either match up as far as COAL and required magazine length. Get the barrel chambered and installed and you will be away to the races! I love that chambering, just shot my first mule deer with my 280AI last week!
