Hey,

I have a quick question...I currently have a 30.06 Remington and I'm looking to replace it with a .308 Semi Browning...am I taking a chance with down sizing to a .308 for moose season?

Secondly, would anyone have or know of someone looking to sell a .308 semi browning?

Thanks for your help!

Jon

I don't think you'll notice too much difference between the preformance of the .30-06 vs. .308. As long as you can deliver the shot to an appropriate place a .308 will floor a moose just as easily.

Just wondering why, if any reason, you're heart set on the browning? The BAR is a fine rifle and I wouldn't nock it, just wondering if there is anything about the Remingtone (I assume you're using a woodsmaster or something similar) that has put you off?

not to mention the woodmaster is built on the 'o6 length action- they just put a spacer in the mag to take up the room- also you shouldn't go heavier than 180 with the 308 as the bullet sits in the powder if you do and seat for mag length- you don't have that problem with the 06

Yea!! ............. like they jam. :)

Don't overlook the Remington 7600s. They work well, as in no jamming, and are accurate, and are lighter than the Brownings semis.

Sorry to break it to you Supercub, but all semi's jam ;)

Granted, some more than others.

  That's what he said. He's talking about the 7600 pump not jamming.

By the way, I don't view going from a 3006 to a .308 as "downsizing", they're almost identical. They'll both kill moose, deer and bear.

Great choice on the Browning semi 308. I've been moose and deer hunting with one for over 25 years. When my son started to hunt with me, he hunts with a BAR 308. Drops a moose great. Of course, you'll need to find out what shoots best with your gun. I use Winchester 180 grain silver tip. I've never, and I repeat never had any of my Brownings jam. Then again I keep them well cleaned. I'm probably a little picky when it comes to keeping my guns clean (and you need to with a semi). Mine are manufactured in Belgium. Perhaps a little heavier than something else, but are you picking a gun just because it's lighter or because you like it and it shoots well for you. Buy a sling.

"...shouldn't go heavier than 180 with the 308..." Nonsense. You don't need a heavier bullet for moose or anything else, but the .308 will handle up to 200 grain bullets with no fuss.
"...taking a chance with down sizing..." You won't be downsizing anything but the cartridge and about 100fps of velocity. The ballistics are identical.

Ballistics are not identical between a .308 and a 30-06.
Semis don't Jam any more often than Pumps.
In fact Pumps are more likely to malfunction due to shooter error.
A BAR in .308 is a great hunting option.

Remington Jam-O-Matic :(
Browning Not-so-Jam-O-Matic :)

Browning IS heavier, but definately a better built arm IMO.

308, will do anything a 30-06 will do, with only slighly less authority... unless you wanty to shoot 200's or 220's.

I think a bar in a .308 would be a fine choice. I don't think the moose will notice much of a difference. IMO

- ok, let me clarifly for the 180- if you take a bullet that's heavier() ie, longer) than 180 and seat it to 308 magazine length, you'll find the tail of the bullet sitting in the powder, compressing it slightly- years ago i saw an article in guns and ammo (308vs 30-06) and they showed a cross-sectioned cartridge showing exactly that- i've shot imperial ( yes that's a long time ago) 200's in my savage 99 and they were unpleasant to shoot , plus they backed the primers out - loaded over pressure from the factory- something i don't want to do again-

BAR Safari =7 lb 6 oz
BAR Lightweigth Stalker = 7 lb 2 oz :(
BAR ShortTrac = 6 lb 10 oz

You need to keep your semi clean, or else it will jam. It is a well know fact that Remington jams more often than BAR.

It took me 2+ year to find a ShortTrac in 308. It is shooting 3/4" with 165 gr partitions and is ready for moose and deer this year.
