Looking for 408

I too would check into the US sniper and long range hunting forums

and I agree with who ever said before, 12K$ - f**k that!

Brian, you weren't wasting my time. Sorry, I didn't realize this opperation was top secret. Now I understand where you're comming from.

Brian46, if you have done the research that you suggest, you know as much as anyone else. There are precision few people actually shooting this platform because there have been precious few rifles actually shooting.

Initial claims of ballistic wonder were challenged by yours truly and the designer backed down after a proper grilling. Only one source of bullets right now, Lost River, lots of initial problems, costs and availability. New facility in Montana might be addressing these issues.

There simply has not been enough shots fired down range by a variety of shooters to garner any info. Infomercials of course speak well of it but I haven't gotten any positive feedback from well heeled shooters chomping to see what this will do.

Right now about the biggest piece of bling you can buy. Seems to be priced accordingly too. My guess is that is the whole point of the excercise. Don't know you at all so a bit prejudice but you did say you researched thoroughly.

If you really want cutting edge tech in ballistics and hitting ability (forget about body armour, you can make much cheaper targets), then contact Wildcat bullets and build a rifle for their heavy 7mm bullets. Being shot by a number of skilled shooters and the results are impressive.

How much long range shooting have you actually done? If you haven't, understand that many many many cartridges can be effectively used to 2500m with impressive accuracy. Most match and VLD bullets will go subsonic without any issue.

So start shooting first, then decide on the bling. But that is just me...

PS you can easily build a superb shooting rig for around $4000CDN. This will shoot 1/4 MOA and I can use the extra $8000 for my commission. Keep reading.

I know there are many rifles and calibers that can put a bullet out to that range, but I want one that can do something at that range and be accurate enough to put it in the center mass every time.

Brian46, I truly sense that you will very dissapointed when you actually start burning powder. At those type of ranges, NOTHING guarantees a center of mass hit. That is up to the skill of the shooter.

With shooting skill, many combos will work.

Not trying to be rude but you are buying into some glamorous marketing promising things a bullet/rifle simply cannot deliver.

Sort of like buying a Ferrari makes you a Brad Pitt or a Mario Andretti. Best cars in the world still need a lot of skill at the helm to show their true potential.

As to Brad Pitt, well there are some very expensive surgeries...

Yes all of this is true, but you have to have a rifle that is capable of doing what u want, after that it is up to the skill of the shooter of course. I have quite a few years of experience with 338 lapua that have taught me a few things. As with anything new there is always a learning curve.

Brian, good luck. If you do manage to get one, let us know how it works-out for you, please. In fact, if you could keep us apprised of the progress, I'd find that very interesting as well (with pix, if possible).

Don't know if I am going off topic here.....but doesn't PGW make a rifle in .408 cal??? I think it's the LRT-2 that they make in that cal. And it only goes for $5K.

Yes, they do have a rifle in 408 and it is more like 7k and then add all the extras. I have already made up my mind about the european company and have a 338 lapua on order to replace my current rifle. My 338 will be landing here in march and the 408 will be here as soon as they tool up for it's production.

Finally a money no object thread, nice change from "what's the cheapest gun, ammo etc." threads and yes I am very jealous.

Well, if that's the case I want a plasma rifle in a 40 watt range. Careful Ralphie, you'll put your eye out!

Will that be the AMP DSR in 338 lapua landing here in March?

NO, AMP is not producing anything for sale right now and is only filling military contracts. At best estimate it will be two years before they will fill any orders. I have found a much better rifle that is being built as we speak and it's accuracy is second to none. I have a 408 on order from them and hope to see them start production sometime around june.
