I would like to know what your best moose killer recipe is in this calibre. Ranges could be from 300 yards and closer.

Thank you in advance,

I am told that the rifle is a mauser action but I have not actually seen it yet. I'm loading for a friend and it's his wife that is shooting this rifle. She shot a moose with it last Fall at about 250 yards using factory loads. He told me that there is a picture of an eagle on the receiver but he couldn't remember the name of the manufacturer.

You better figure out if it's a 96 or a 98 Mauser.
96 Mauser= 46000 CUP max
98 Mauser= 50000-53000 CUP max

Surf up some recipies for the specific pressure tollerance, using 150gr or heavier bullets, my favorite is the plain jane Hornady 154gr. SP, on top of some 4350 powder(H or IMR)

Sounds like either a 1908 or 1909 large ring sporter. If so, do you have any pic's? These were probably the very best of the Mausers.

It is not a good idea to load for a friends rifle. Away worse would be to load for a friends wife's rifle! You should be able to try out the loaded rounds as you load, to be sure they are OK.

They will be bringing the rifle out to the range with me to try it so it's not like I'm giving them ammo to experiment with. Even if I had a suggested bullet to start with, that would help. I'm thinking of maybe using the Barnes TSX 150 gr.

Christy used a 154gr Interbond over enough H414 to go 2800. Her moose was very impressed. I am going to try the traditional cup and core 154gr when I run out of the Interbonds.

For entertainment we are going to try some 175's as well but I have no load to offer for that one yet. Going to try H4895, H380 and maybe 4350.

49 grains of W760 = 2900 fps from a 29" bbl and 2760 fps from a 22.5" bbl with 140 grain bullets.

This is a mild load listed in the Lyman manuals and only produces around 40,000 psi. Well within the range of the earlier mausers.

It's also very accurate in any rifle I've tried it in.

As long as you do your job and put the bullet in the right place, it's lethal on Moose, elk, bear and dear.
