Hey guys, can anybody suggest a 1-4x scope for my AR15 flat top? i was looking to max out around $600.

I was looking at the Leupold 1-4, the Vortex 1-4, the Millet DMS 1-4. Pretty sure the Millet is out as i have heard a little about poor quality.. I like the lifetime warranty of Leupold and Vortex..

Any help would be appreciated.

Also, can i just put a scope in rings or does it need to be in an expensive mount?

Where is the best place to buy?

Looked through the Vortex in the store , Looks good , will probably get one for one of my AR`s but I just got the 3x magnifier for behind the Aimpoint , Very happy with the it.

With a budget of 600, then Vortex 1-4 without a doubt. The glass, and turrets are way better than the Millett, but the extra $250 should get you something.

How important is the illuminated recticle? I think only the Vortex has it. Would these be good for close up fast shooting as well? I just got back from Wholesale Sports, nice since they are open late. Funny I was looking through some glass and wasn't too impressed when the guy at the counter told me I was looking through the wrong end :) Ouch.

If your AR deserves a good optic it will need a good mount. Save up and buy quality otherwise it could end up costing you more to get what you should have got the first time(don't ask me how I know).;)
Here's my suggestion...NF NXS 1-4x24 Zero stop/LaRue SPR1.5 QR. You won't be disappointed!

If you strech your budget a little bit a Trijicon tr-24 is great and so easy for rapid aquisition of target... JP.

This is the truth. If your optic is going to spend most of its time on 1x shooting short range, then this is the best 1-4x out there. You can pay more but you will not get more.(I cant comment on the 1-4 Elcans)

If you are shooting longer ranges and want a reticle with additional aiming points, or you use your turrets alot to correct for the different ranges then you may like the Vortex better.

Yuuuuuuuup ,

24/7 illumination without a battery, nice clear glass. Love the green chevron version.

Millet or vortex will do just fine for range use. If you are going into battle then the nf or s&b short dot in a larue mount is mandatory IMO

So far, and especially for the price I am more than happy with the Millet. No it's not a Leupold, but lets be honest, the difference in clarity at 4x magnification between the two isn't that significant, particularly in how it will effect your shooting. With an illuminated reticle (with lots of adjustment, and bright enough to be used both eyes open, outdoors on a clear day), and about as good a true 1x magnification as I have seen on a telescopic sight it's a damn good optic at a damn good price.

Gary,

im starting to thing like that. That is where it started out, the next thing i know, im looking at $1000 Trijicons, hehe. I might get the Millet with the PEPR mount, which will leave me enough money left over to put a Sparc on my shotgun. Have a line on a couple used DMS-1's, wonder if i need a receipt for warranty?

There is a place that has the Trijicon TR24 1-4 for $795. No longer a board sponser so I don't think I can link his sight.

I have the Millett, Vortex and the Trijicon.

Since your budjet is 600 don't even look at the Millett. It is a good scope for the money, but since you can afford better, then look at something else. Glass is OK, but there is alot of distortion around the edge of the image on 1x. Turrets are crude(don't even click). Reticle is good. Illumination washes out in the daytime, but you can still see the reticle well enough.

Vortex has great turrets and even a rudimentary zero stop. Illumination is great. From NV settings to very bright. Glass is great esp for the money. But there still is some distorting around the edge on 1x. Reticle has ranging/aiming marks for longer distance.

Trijicon is supurb on 1x. No distortion around the edge. Not sure why, but it is easier and faster to get my eye behind it for snap shooting(exit pupil maybe?) The image seems to go right out to the edge of the scope body. On 4x the top of the triangle post is pretty good for precise shots out to 300m but there are no additional aiming or ranging marks on the reticle. Turrets are covered, but I guess you could leave the covers off. Illumination dosn't need batteries, but could be brighter in pitch dark.

So my advice is to figure out how important 1x is to you. If you are mostly shooting supported 1-300 m then the Vortex will serve you well for less money. If you are shooting off hand CQB stuff at +/-50m and occasionally out to 2-300m then take a look at the Trijicon.

Presonally I like the Trijicon the best but that depends on how much the extra $2-300 is worth to you and the other above mentioned stuff is. S&B, not worth the money or the weight. If they start deploying fat middle aged bald men, then maybe. You might be able to get a NF used for 1200 but that will double your budget, and I honestly don't think the 1x is as good as the Trijicon.
