I think that a Norinco 1911 or CZ model that they produce would be a good choice for a first pistol.

They aren't precision shooters, but very reliable, solid quality, and best of all extremely inexpensive.

Worth a look if you're interested.

Or, if you can find something used, you can get something nice.

Every firearms company these days seems to make a 1911 model, so there is an endless choice of them, many of which are extremely good quality. But, you can easily spend a grand for any of these.

You need to follow the "user CP" link above, and join the groups listed there. The moderator vets every request, but I think they are rather liberal, if you will pardon the expression. This will allow you access to the equipment exchanges.

For a first handgun, I'd strongly recommend a good .22LR rimfire pistol like the Ruger MK II or MK III or even a S&W 617. Very economical to feed and the lack of recoil will allow you to develop proper shooting techniques. Once you have the basics down, then look at picking up a centerfire hangun. Either of your initial choices are good. The CZ 75/85 are well made, accurate pistols that won't break the bank. New 9mm 1911s are going to be much harder to find and will run you close to twice the cost of the CZ unless you opt for a Norinco 1911 in 9mm. The other option is to purchase used. There is a used 9mm Colt 1911 for sale in the EE right now by Pitdogboy. Good luck with the search!:)

I would recommend the S&W M&P in 9mm. I've been shooting alot of 9mm handguns and I find that the S&W can't be beat for it's price. You could try getting one from Frontier, they are a CGN dealer and you can find their link above. They are having a sale now on them, and trust me, you won't regret it.

Edited to add:

Sorry, I wasn't paying attention, I see now that you're looking for a 1911 or a CZ in 9mm. If those are the only 2 you are looking at, I'd go with the CZ.

A Norc 1911 from Gunnar is a great idea, the buy in is low and as you become more experienced, and require more from it you can improve it. Out of the box they're OK, but you can tighten them up, and have match barrels, target sights etc. fitted to make them extremely accurate, as your ability improves.
