After considering all the options, I've decided to go with the 338 lapua.
My budget is (rifle only) about 6-8k and I want to avoid custom builds, as the resale is usually not as good. I'm looking for semi-auto rifle that can withstand the elements and can take a bit of abuse. Any suggestions?

I guess the next logical question is what is the application that you want to use the rifle for? There are not that many semi auto, non custom, 338 Lapua's out there. Question for you:

Does your price include optics in your budget?
Does your price include ammo?
Are you looking for a long range precision rifle?
Restricted or non restricted platform?
Any weight restrictions?

If you were talking about a bolt gun, non restricted, long range, with some ammo and a scope....you might be able to find something but you will likely have to give somewhere ie scope/ammo etc. Unfortunately 338 lapua tends to translate into 10K investment rather quickly....

Vigilance Rifles builds a semi-auto .338LM. Cobb makes one as well.
Not sure if you can get either of these up here or not tho.

I respectfully disagree.....

I just got my final bill from my g-smith for my Remington 700 Police in 338LM. I still don't have it in my hot little hands just yet..... Tuesday I hope!

I have the rifle, 2 mags, 20 moa Rail, bedded the action & the first 2" of the barrel, bedded the 20 moa rail, ATRS bolt handle & a Timney trigger... Then scope and rings. I also have 300 brass, 1000 bullets in 225 & 250 gr (500 of each) plus powder & 1000 LRMMP (Large Rifle Magnum Match Primers)

The rifle was $1650 shipped, including 20moa rail and extra mag.
The scope & rings were 1500 incl. taxes
New bolt handle & machining is $175
Timney trigger is $200, no installation costs as he was going to remove the trigger group while bedding the action.
Bullets cost $500 ($449.89 +taxes), 1xf Brass cost $390 incl shipping, Primers cost $80, Powder is going to be $400 for the 1000rnd (average about $30/lb for powder)
I already reload so all I needed was dies, and the appropriate shell holders for my press & trimmer, say about $125.

Total Input cost for my current set-up is $5000(ish)....... Just a little more than my Tax return ........ Just don't tell the wife, she thinks the rifle & everything was like $1750!

For a semi like the OP wants........ I shudder to think. Starting with a Barret would easily double my figures..... and the only thing to change would be the rifle. 6K instead of 1.5K...... Isn't the 98 Bravo a bolt gun too?

Cheers!

Ok so we have established the lower end at $5K. I would say most have invested a bit more, particularly in the scope area. The point is, you don't go for a 338 Lapua if your being thrifty....the two don't relate. I have over $10K invest...anyone with an AI or PGW with a decent scope have at least that. Not knocking that you can do it cheaply but the guy is looking for something....that I don't think really exists in the price range he wants...

More to point...find me a semi auto 338 that is in the country right now.....for $5K....I don't think so.

I figure my total investment will be about 12k or so...I want a non- restricted semi-auto, and I will be using it in remote locations so I want to keep around 30-35 lbs if possible. That's probably not realistic but as close to those needs as possible

The VR1 is about $8000usd. Once you go through the paperwork and time to get one up here I would not be suprised if you end up spending your full budget on the rifle alone.
You can stay well within your budget if you do a bolt gun but it will be difficult in a semi-auto platform.
I think there are a few AR uppers that allow you to shoot .338 but nit sure if they are semi or bolt.

??? is that so its easier to pack around in the mountains...30-35#'s? What the hell are you doing with it? Is this some kind of sniper fantasy thread? You had me until you mentioned the feather weight gun you are planning on "for remote locations".

Here is the bad boy you need.

h ttp://www.onlylongrange.com/badnews.asp

That was the AR style one I was thinking of. Looks like it would meet all your criteria but you would never be able to take it into the bush as it would be restricted being an AR style firearm.

Get youself a Sako TRG42 in 338lapua, if the 338lapua give you some kind of woody, other wise get it in 300WM, You won't be sorry about the choice you make with SAKO TRG42. AI is also a winner but for 1AI rifles, I can almost get 2 Sako, AS for PGW I rather get PGW than an AI to support Canadian Manufacture.

There is nothing "featherweight" about 30-35 pounds, The VR1 338 Lapua is 17 pounds empty, and with optic and ammo I would guess it would top out at about 25-27 lbs. As for the sniper fantasy thread comment, not really interested in shooting at any more people if I can avoid it..I spent just over 3 years in the sandbox and I've had my fill of it......

I am in fact going to be in the Mid coast of B.C. Throughout the mountains with the intent of doing some long-range shooting, the precision rifle hobby is new for me and I'm looking for the best bang for my buck. Perhaps 12k is unrealistic for a semi-auto 338 lapua with a quality optic, hence the reason I started the thread in the first place...

So to the people who have provided positive input, what can I realistically expect to get for 12k?

12K will get you lots of weed to continue smoking.
How are your adolescent comments of any help on this issue?

I'm asking for advice from knowledgeable people, not somebody with a piss poor attitude and too much time on their hands....

Put your helmet back on, get back on the short bus and quit being a pain in my a$$
