I am in the market for a AR type rifle. I have done a bit of shopping and have looked at a few. These have included the Colt M4, some Windham and a Ruger.
I want to stay with a 223 cal. Any thoughts on what to look for and what to stay away from?

Thank you for your replies. Here is more information on what I'm planning.

Not interested in cheap. Mid range to higher. $1500 to $2700 area.
I am planning on using it for target which right now means bench and range. I have considered 3 gun but that will be way down the line.

I am also open to NR variants.

Budget? Purpose of the gun?
Here are my favorite brands for ar15's that I can afford (not in any particular order)
Stag
Colt
DD
Windham
Home made using aero parts

Need to know your budget and what type of shooting you plan to do.
Will you be sitting at a bench shooting 300-600 yards or will you be doing 3-gun?
You can spend from $1000-$4000 and there is a difference in quality the more you spend. A $1000 rifle will function fine and serve a casual shooter well but if you are going to be putting thousands of rounds through it in competitions then you may want to spend more and get one with better quality parts, better machining, better barrel, and better coatings.

Also keep in mind that you will probably end up spending another couple hundred dollars swapping out furniture, and then there is feeding it.

Not many people can have just one either, I was up to 6 a month ago but now I'm back to 4. They're all different and they're all fun.

Building one is an option, you won't save any money and could actually end up spending more but you will end up with exactly what you want without having to try to sell off the parts you don't want.

Id second going for an NR black rifle. Lots of choces in .223/556 and theres no hoola hoops or red tape. You can take it and enjoy it elsewere other then at a range. Ive got a stag model 4 sitting in my safe collection dust becuase i did not consider NR alternatives

I don't see buying restricted a prob...I shoot all my NR rifles at a range, so having a restricted is a no brainer for me... If your willing to lay down that kind of cash buy a Diemaco/Colt SA20 or the SA15.7.... I purchased the SA15.7 and its top end and then there's the pride of owning something built right here in Canada

For your plans and budget I'd suggest Daniel Defense. If the dollar wasn't so soft I'd also say a Colt from IRG. The Colt Canada rifles are nice, but waaaay too much money for a name tag IMHO...

If you only plan to use it at the range, might as well go AR. A good buddy of mine just got back from the colt canada plant (diemaco) where he took the armorers course. He was nothing but impressed with Diemaco and states they are pretty much the best available. He's a pretty smart dude, so my money is on diemaco c8

With your new info I would suggest you look at a PWS 12-14.5 inch rifle. My 12 inch has run flawlessly for 5000+ rounds and still shoots sub moa with quality ammo.
