Looking for a bolt .223, Updated...Found one.

That is a beautiful rifle, thanks for the suggestion. These days I have a very unhealthy obsession with parts and get very nervous owning something that is hard to source. I don’t even want to talk about what I have on hand for 1894 spares although I do use it for CAS so its kind of a good thing. Also the more I buy and sell online the more I want to handle something in person before I purchase it. Sort of looking for something a little more modern.

Stopped by the LGS today may just look into an Axis II hardwood or 110 predator too. So many options.

If it were me I would go for a savage 110, Howa 1500 mini (with some kind of aftermarket stock as the 1500 mini magazines/bottom plastic is horrendous), or a tikka t3x

You might also try looking for a savage model 25 varminter, they seem pretty solid

M1911, I have had guns long enough that I really don’t want to spend a bit of money on something and wish a few months later when the fun wears off that I would have spent a bit more so I do appreciate your insights. I really like my current Savage a lot with no plans to sell it but its not really for the bench. I like the Howa which is what drew me to the Weatherby in the first place. Think I will cruise the used market for a bit, a buddy has a Vanguard he can lend me to try out… asked him today and he said sure keep it will let you know If I need it back. I had a Stevens 200 about 10 years ago I really should not have sold but I was a different shooter then. I could of had it pretty done up by now.

I did think the Axis II with the wood stock did look interesting though and may not need upgrading. I have read some good things about them and found it on clearance for $750 at a fairly local CanTire. Not reall big on the mag but figure a single shot adapter is probably pretty easy. I would really prefer an intenal magazine……..and then there is CZ too.

Thanks again everyone!

Do you have one? If so how do you like it?

With mine, I can't shoot for sh***. I have tried different bullet weights, it just does not want to group that well. I am talking 3-4 MOA. I expected better for the price. Are my expectations unrealistic?

Yep, I've had them, and I would have sent that one back. Your expectations are certainly not unreasonable, I think somethings very wrong.

So I found a .223 and even made it to the range. We only have 50 yards but it was a good warm up for the rifle. The action is nice and smooth and with the longer barrel it does not seem to breathe as much fire as the scout. I only needed one layer of ear protection. The internal magazine loaded quite well, there were no burs and had no issues or FTF with AE bulk. Howa makes a very fine rifle indeed. I may look into changing the springs as mine is a little heavy and was fully backed off at the factory but may just get used to it as there is no creep. I may pop the hammer out and make it flat as it curves quite a bit so it needs to be held high. I like the S2 as its a two stage so it reminds me of my Weihrauch air rifle. There is about an 1/8” of take up and then it is like glass. I Even showed it to a few guys at the club and after being startled by the first shot they got used to the take up and were like thats a nice rifle! Grouping was also very good but with such a thin barrel it needs some time to cool between shots. I was getting .25 for 3 shots with AE bulk, the world’s cheapest bipod and sand bags. I did try out a heavy barrel at a shop but I want something I can carry around too.

Very good choice
You should be able to print under MOA 3 shot groups - it's a hunting rifle and designed to carry all day long - with the 24 inch barrel you just have to look at the drop charts on the ammo box and your pretty much good. You do not realize it yet but your rifle just saved you a ton of money

I did get to handle a couple Vanguards a heavy barrel and a no2 contour and the heavy felt like a flag pole. Like I said I got a friend deal on the contour model.

I realize barrel heating would be an issue and did notice it after several shots on the range. After the initial sight in I let it cool off between shots and it was shooting like a champ. I also plan on hitting the bush with it over the winter and the weight with scope feels about perfect. Its funny a few years ago I used to hit the range with 500 or so rounds and felt like I spent the whole day there. Now I bring 100 or so and have just as much fun in an hour or two. For me the .223 will be an occasional thing anyways and this sure is a nice rifle.

Good looking rifle, good for 69 grn'ers?

Is that the 'select' model?
which seems like an odd designation from Weatherby, not sure what is 'select'

boxhitch

It is not a select model, Vanguard green synthetic 24” no.2 contour 1:9 twist. I have only tried 55 grain bulk ammo at this time.
I also ended up ordering a spring kit from High Velocity Hunting Australia over lunch, promises a 1.5 lb trigger $30 shipped. I could have cut the spring but I don't much like clipping things that are factory.

I tried to do a fair amount of reading about the Vanguard but tell you the truth there really isn't a lot of info out there. They are either not a very popular rifle or nobody does much with them. I sort of wanted it since I want something I can more or less leave alone. No interest in upgrading stocks. Also I bought Weaver bases. Not really sure what Weaver was thinking with the notch placement on the bases. Why have a nice long base and only a single notch on it....Oh well.
