Well then get the .22 version, one on the EE right now for $205 shipped I believe. .22lr is dirt cheap and that makes this fun to shoot all day. That said if you truly want to use this as a "survival/back packer" rifle then the .17hmr is pretty awesome. .17hmr is far more powerful a round and costs accordingly.

These rifles are super light, and pretty neat for what they are. However seems the novelty wears off and they get sold for a more sophisticated upgrade rifle.

They're one of the "just gotta try" guns, but otherwise....nothing to write home about. I've had 2 of them in .22. I think if you want one for it's intended purpose (a light gun for carry, that you don't actually plan to use much) they have their place, but as a gun to sit and shoot for any length of time=no thanks. Ergonomics aren't good, the wire frame isn't fun on your cheek in freezing weather (or any other time) the rails are plastic, the body/action looks like pot metal, etc.

If it were really for a "survival" situation and not just sniping a grouse for the h*** of it, I'd look for a 22WMR. Very capable, small-game caliber.
 
One of my favourite guns...

It is the gun I have with the most kills.

It is the gun I take almost every time I go somewhere that I can shoot/plink

It is the most flexible gun I own as a .22LR due to subsonic/quiets, HV, and stingers.

It is hearing safe with quiets, or CB long.

It is amazing fun to plink with.

It is fun to modify.

It doesn't waste ammo.

It is accurate to a fault.


I love it.

22LR for cheapest/most quiet plinking, smallest game, most use
17HMR for bigger game, likely more meat damage, pricier ammo, flat-shooting and most distance/accuracy
22WMR if something the size of a coyote might happen, but otherwise... pricey to feed like HMR is, and the loudest of the 3
