:confused:I'm looking to source a gas tube shim kit for my Norinco M14. I've tried Wolverine, et cetera, but it seems that every site says that they are sold out or not in stock. Does anybody know where I can pick a kit up?

Marstar generally has them, but most make their own. If you don't have the stuff to do that, pm Hungry, he will probably set you up

Ya that's right, comes with 3 but they are different thickness so depending on the looseness you can choose the best one for your rifle. Works great, easy install. I did not even take the flash hider off, just cut the spacer at a 45 angle with a wire cutter and slid it over the brl that way. Nice and tight now.

I can make some up for you. I use 8 thou (or 0.008") thick shims. You won't need more than 3 of them.

BTW, did you try flipping (180 degrees) your gas cylinder lock around? Sometimes (actually, quite often :D ) you won't need any shims to get the gas cylinder lock to 'time' is this pattern:

* contact at about 4 or 5 o'clock
* rubber/plastic mallet to 6 o'clock or bottom dead center (that's the pressure needed)

PM me if you still need shims! I can make some up for you....

Cheers,
Barney

This is always worth a try, and if it comes up a bit too tight, you can easily remove a bit of material from the gas lock with a flat stone or fine sandpaper on a flat surface (like a piece of thick glass) to make it fit correctly as above. Just lap the gas lock in a circular or figure 8 pattern to assist in keeping the surface flat.

Alternatively, you can peen the shoulder surface on the barrel with a prick or center punch. This will take up the slack in the same fashion as shimming and does not require flash hider removal.

Personally, I prefer the gas lock reverse/surfacing method over shims or peening, assuming the gas port alignment is correct to begin with.

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner as for some reason I was not notified about your response. Thanks for the info and it looks like this is the route that I will follow.

Cheers,
Peter
