Hey,

I am looking for some help in finding a good (although not too expensive) .22 to do some rabbit hunting with. This last winter I was using an old .22 my father has had since he was 10. However, now that I have moved to Edmonton I no longer have that rifle at my disposal.

My wife had ordered me a Winchester Wildcat .22 Bolt Action Rifle for christmas from S.I.R in Manitoba, however the thing has been on back order ever since; who knows if it will ever come in. So instead I figured I would look around the Edmonton area.

Do any of you have any suggestions as to a good .22 to go with? As well, what are some of the good firearm dealers around the city? (Totally new here...as in four weeks new).

Thanks for all the help,
Joel

small 22 with a big bang

I've been out looking for a 22 for my boy to get him shooting at the range. The guy at my local gun store (LeBaron in Markham) has suggested the Savage Arms 22LR Bolt Action Mark 2 F. It's a basic bolt with metal sights, a 10 round mag and it comes with a composite stock. All this for under $200, and it's made right here in Ontario. I think that's what the boy's getting if I can't find something better here in the forums.

Happy Hunting.

Check out the Exchange-lots of 22lr in there. What is expensive? $100, $200, $300? I have a Ruger 1022 I am quite fond of. Bolts are mostly out for me-left handed. So either pump, lever, or semi. Lots of Rugers around but the cheapest will be an old Cooey or Savage bolt. Mostly under $100 likely. They all shoot and live pretty much forever. Clean it and oil it and learn to shoot it. If he sticks with it you can upgrade later. Gazillions of used 22lr out there-should be an easy quest. Keep in mind that it is just a 22 after all so fussy can be a waste. My $0.02

It depends on how much you want to spend. $200? Get a Savage MKII in either wod or synthetic. Their very accurate, and quite well made. Canadian made too. Wanna spend more? For about $500, you can get a CZ that will shoot as good as any .22 out there, heresay of heresay, but it's true. Their extrememly well made, and very accurate worth every penny. These are both bolt actions. I can't say about the Remington model 5, never touched one. If you want an auto loader, I would highly recommend a Marlin model 60. Also very accurate. These run about $150. Good luck.

if it's a semi-auto you're looking for then get a ruger 10/22.reliable and lots of mods/upgades/bling to play with when you get bored of the look.goes for about 200-300 bucks.sorry to offend anyone of the lakefield64b and variants fans, but stay away from that model.the 64b is a real jamomatic.

Re 1022 patterns like a shotgun. I dont buy that-first time I hunted with mine there were 3 headless grouse. Good eating. Mebbe the nut behind the wheel? Mine eats whatever I feed it and as fast as I can pull the trigger if I feel like it. This one stays in the pack. This was before I had the trigger done too.

I love my 10/22. Is it as accurate as a bolt- no- but it works for what I do. Just out day before yesturday and their where plenty of dead gophers when I was done

get a lever action....fast ,compact and accurate...but stay away from a henry!!...too many plastic and aluminum parts for my liking...
if you can find a winchester model 9422 at a decent price ,jump on it...

+2 No problems with accuracy with mine. 50 yards, stock everything, 5 rounds, 3/4 inch group doesn't sound like a shotgun to me.

Might be time to have someones eyes checked! LOL

Cooey Model 600 is where it's at for the price. They live forever, and with my Bushnell Trophy 4-12x50mm I can pick the eye out of a grouse at 50 yards no problem. Seriously, my Cooey give my CZ 452 American a run for its money.
