I am looking for an Air Rifle that will kill little critters efficiently. Looking for a .177 or .22 in the 1000 fps+ range and accurate.

Don't want to spend a fortune.

Most pellet guns I have used seem to have a horrid trigger pull, is this typical?

Diana makes good air rifles, but the top models can be around $600. Some models are available with basic wood in stead of the fancier grades for the $300 price range.

I actually build/tune airguns as a hobby/part-time business. The cheapest pest control gun that is actually very good is the $109.99 2289G "Backpacker" from Canadian Tire. Factory, they shoot a 14.3gr .22 at about 440 FPS, but with a little work that # can be bumped up into the mid 700's, more than enough for any creature up to (but not including IMHO) raccoons. Best of all......its QUIET. The problem with the big springers is that some of them make a big bang when shot (although not as much as the hi-power co2 guns). Also, avoid any gun that shoots over 1000 FPS. At 1050 or so the pellet actually becomes unstable, and accuracy becomes non-existant. Further to this, if you were to buy the 1250, you might as well use a .22 with subs. At 1250 you get the supersonic crack which kind of negates the advantages of using a pellet gun to begin with.

Wrong Way, could you educate me on how to tune up the backpacker. I'll go out and buy a new one if it can be suped up.

Cheers

For around $275 you can get the Baikal MP-513. Available in Canada only in .22 cal. Muzzle velocity is over 800 fps.

Considering the price range, the Baikal is nice in every aspect except I don't like that plastic rear sight......

I'd still prefer the .22 cal Model 350 @ 900 fps or a 34 or 36 @ 800 fps - noise isn't that much :D

I may have a Quest 1000 coming. I say may because there was no mention of PAL. I'll find out tomorrow :D If not, the local Kombodian Tire has a backpacker. I'll LMAO if I get the 1000.

Tuning the 2289

is the same as tuning the 1377,(they use the same valve and frame)and the information can be found at the Crosman forum.

The Crosman Quest 500 and the Quest 1000 are virtually the same rifle. The only difference is the length of the piston. One could turn a 500 into a 1000, by cutting down the piston(to the size of the 1000) and cutting a new sear notch. KD

I have one of the new CZ 634's, which I am rapidly growing very fond of. Insanely accurate for a spring air gun. At 25 meters, it will consistently shoot groups you can cover with a dime - in the bullseye all the time, no wandering! And that just using cheap Gamo pellets ($12 per 1,000). It's supposedly tuned to Brit laws (11.5fpe/720FPS), though that's enough for small cirtters (and I've read several reports of guys with chrongraphs showing 800fps+ with the 634's).

In air guns, as with big guns - accuracy is 100% critical and you can't do without it. More velocity/bigger bullets are only nice to have, assuming you've got enough to start with.

My only complaint with the 634 is trigger creep. It's very light (and adjustable down to the 1lb range I might add), but there is some distinct creep in it. Haven't taken it apart yet to see if I can fix that or not.
