Looking for a Hunting/Security Shotgun

Hey there guys, looking for a shotgun that I can hunt turkeys and foul but that seconds as security. In the past I’ve owned a few Remington 870, one being a super magnum 3 1/2 Chamber. A few years back I had a run in with Bell’s palsy, I didn’t have any permanent affects, thank God, but the super magnum with a turkey load was just too much recoil for my right cheek to handle. I’ve been professional trained on a 870 so tended to stick with what I know, I’d still like to get something for turkeys mostly but would prefer a shorter barrel length and standard 2 3/4 -3 inch chamber and something I can choke up. Any of you shotgun guys could recommend something that might fit these parameters would be really appreciated. I don’t mind another manufacturer, maybe time to broaden my shotgun horizons!

I’d go with a semi auto to help with recoil. If thats what you’re leaning toward, a Mossberg 930 field/security combo fits the bill. They come with a 28” barrel for hunting and an 18” barrel for home defence

I have many Mossbergs and they are great. The 500/590/930 series and more have 2 extractors versus Remingtons one. If absolute reliability in security situations is needed, I like your chances with a mossberg. I have used them exclusively for over 20 years. I also didnt like the extra weight Remingtons have. They felt like carrying cinderblocks after a few hours.
 
I thought I heard that Remington was going out of business a while ago but they seem to be up and running?! I can’t find any 870s on their site. So I would consider other models if in the future the 870 is not supported.

However, we are not seeing many 870s making their way into Canada right now. You will have a hard time finding a brand new 870 right now except for some Tac-14s that dealers still have in stock. The situation might change in 6 month and we might see again a steady flow of 870 coming in to the country ....

For now .... its the used market ....
 
Well, there have been approx. 11 million 870s made and no shortage of them on the used market. If an 870 is what you know/like, not overly hard to get your hands on one. Obviously, there is a barrel for every application, including turkey. The one I had was a vent rib/Remchoke...and I think it was 21" long. A magazine extension kit and about 3 minutes of effort answers the other question. It's whether or not you feel you need a different barrel, but 21" is very manageable. They can be had down to 12.5" or less, though I think 18" would be as short as I would go. Over the years, I've owned 870s with 12.5", 20" (rifle sight), 21" Remchoke, 26" Remchoke and 28" Remchoke. The barrels I use most now are 20" rifle sights/smooth bore, and 28" VR/Remchoke. Haven't hunted turkey yet, keep threatening to. lol

Semis do have less felt recoil, and I'd echo what was said about the 930. I've shot the 930 Tactical version, that gun certainly chugs along effortlessly. (every load type we fed it, including #7-1/2 bird shot) Don't feel as nostalgic looking at Mossbergs, and don't find them to be overly handsome guns compared to Remingtons. lol However, I've been very impressed shooting them and the model 500 I've shot most feels light compared to a Wingmaster. Guess that aluminum receiver makes a big difference.
 
True what you say .22lrguy. I find Mossbergs significantly lighter. Rems are good for stationary stuff like turkey blinds and duck blinds but Mossberg shine for carry and nimbleness. The light weight sure is appreciated on long walks for birds and rabbits.
 
Why don’t you get a 2 3/4 or 3 inch chambered 870 with a 28 inch barrel with choke tubes. Then buy a short barrel like a smooth bore slug barrel. Get a good tight choke (standard Remington full choke or one of the after market turkey chokes). Lots of turkeys have been shot with the standard 1 1/4 oz #6 express loads or the 1 3/8 loads. Pattern your shotgun with the choke tubes and the various loads to find the tightest shooting load, then you will be good to go. Shoot what you know with normal loads (reduced buckshot loads too), and life will be good. The Remington 870 is a fine reliable shotgun.
