hey guys .. living in New Zealand so some of the products may not be available to me that you can get over there, but im looking for a rifle.

im leaning well towards the remington 700 in .308 ( as .308 ammo is affordable here ) but could be pushed into .270 or .300wsm
i would like to be able to get accuracy at ranges of 500m + , which i know isnt that far as 308's will comfortably travel to 1000.
im not trying to build an F class ... just a comfortably accurate rifle that i can also pack up and take up into the hills to find dinner

i'll be using an AICS stock, which 700 would you recommend ?
most models are available here, i prefer the longer heavy barrells 26" or there abouts .

ive only been shooting with a norc m305 and 12g Fabarm H38 on water fowl , so my knowledge of whats required for long range accuracy is limited.

any and all input is appreciated

Fenix.

edit: stock type and base rifle type is flexable .. rem 700 and AI stock are just readily available thats all

For >$700 CAD the Rem 700 SPS varmint in .308 would be my first choice. Essentially the same 26" barrel and action as the 700P but comes with a disposable injection molded plastic stock. It will drop into the AICS.

If you are going to be using an AICS stock and investing that kind of money, get a Barnard Action. They're made in NZ and they have the same dimensions as a remington. Better quality and you can put whatever barrel you want on it.

my reasoning for the 700 was that its reasonably cheap ( money at this point in time IS a factor ) , but at a later date, as i get more into long range target shooting, i could replace the action and barrell with some a bit more accurate, then i could have a seperate hunting rifle and target rifle

See if you can find a used(I don't know if they still make them) Rem 700 VLS in .308, 26" barrel and very accurate.
