Ok, so currently I have a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40mm scope on my bolt action rimfire. Most of my shooting is done at 50yards or more. I do some hunting with this gun, but most of the time I use it for target shooting.
The biggest problem I have with the current scope is the lack of clarity at higher magnifications. Also, at the highest magnification (9x) it seems that no matter how much I try adjusting the scope, parallax always exists. Is it that the scope was not meant to be used at high magnification at short distances (50 yards)?
Regardless, I'd like to find another scope to mount on this rifle (Savage MK II LV.) The Bushnell Elite scopes seem to be highly recommended. I like the 4-12X option. But it only exists in the 3200 series. I would LIKE to find something with a side focus option, however that seems unlikely (unless I spend big $$$.)
For me the most important feature I want in a scope is a nice, crisp, clear image. With this scope (at high magnification) I can't get the target and the reticle crosshairs to both be focused. Either the reticle is crisp and clear, and the target somewhat blurry, or vice versa. I dunno...maybe I'm doing something wrong. But at 9x the image is just not very sharp to begin with. I know, you get what you pay for.
So, what would everyone recommend? Should I look only at 'rimfire' scopes? Or am I ok with a regular hunting/target scope? I'm thinking these scopes are my current options:
-Bushnell Elite 4200 3-9x 40mm
-Bushnell Elite 3200 4-12x 40mm
-Leupold VX-1 4-12x40mm
-Nikon Buckmaster (4.5-14x mil-dot w/side focus or 4-12x50mm w/side focus)
If I had the money (which I DON'T) I would get a nice Leupold Mark4 4.5-14x40mm PR w/mil-dot reticle. Either that or the Bushnell Elite 4200 6-24x40mm, which I would use only for target shooting. But, I don't have the money right now, so...yeah.
So...what say you? Any other recommendations?
