So im in the market for a new .22 semi auto.

I was wondering if any one could give me some input on whats good out there in the land of the 10/22.

Should i bite the bullet and get a 10/22 or is there something out there that is equally as good or better?

Also, on a side note, during my search i discovered the .22wmr

Should i stick to the .22lr or go with the .22wmr Im a fan of more power but ive read that some semis have cycling problems with the longer cartridge.

Thanks for the input!

Cheers

The gold standard of 22 auto is the 10/22. Huge numbers out there, lots of aftermarket, mods and models. The other one that comes to mind is the 597, not as much of a following or aftermarket.

I made the mistake of buying a used 10/22, accuracy was horrible probably due to the previous owners melting the barrel with mag dumps. Buy new then you know the history.

I have had a 22 WMR, but not in a semi. The cost is up from about 6c/round for bulk 22lr to in the neighborhood of 17c/round for 22 WMR. Would be a much more expensive toy, even though my prices are no doubt out. Common saying for a 22 WMR is ....twice a LR and half a Hornet. The only thing i could see as a advantage in the 22 WMR would be if you decided to use it for something like pest/predator control. And i would choose a centerfire for that.

I second the advice issued by nowarningshot... New 10/22 is the way to go in my books. They're inexpensive, reliable and accurate, and have a HUGE number of accessories and after-market mods you can install. You won't save much buying used, and you never know how they were treated.

I also agree with his comments on the .22WMR. Not a lot of upside in performance but three to four times the cost...

Thanks for the info guys, i have had my eyes on the 10/22 VLEH for a while but its out of stock at a lot of places. I do have a centrefire in.308 but id like a .22 just for plinking and maybe pests.

Go with the 10/22.

It is the Benchmark where all other 22lrs are measured.

There are cheaper guns
There are more accurate guns
There are guns with better fit & finish

But there is no other firearm with more parts, accessories and support than the 10/22 (this is important in Canada!)

You could "build" your own 10/22 with just aftermarket parts alone!

If you just want a 22 autoloader and don't plan to mod it, have a look at the Marlin 795. Lousy mags but more accurate out of the box compared to the Ruger. Cheaper too (and you can feel that cheapness too, unfortunately)

I have no experience with 22wmr and if I did feel the itch to step up, I would just skip 22wmr and start to look at 17Hmr

My 0.22 cents

I agree with all the other posts about the 10 22 u can do any mods to it u want others not so much and the last post about the 17 hmr I totally agree with it is a tack driver and very devastating on small game honestly don't know about semi auto though but bolt guns r very fun with the hmr accurate with the sound of a bigger gun

If it is for plinking, think about it I just fired 1700 rds of 22 at $100. 22 mag would have been over 300. 17 hmr. Maybe 500. The mag rimfires are great for pests but cost too much for the gopher patch. All JMHO.

I was looking at the 597, since im heavily cosidering the 22mag, anyone know where to get good aftermarket mags and stocks. Just to semi-tac it out.
