Looking for a rifle

With my PAL arriving hopefully within the next couple weeks I've started looking into a good deer rifle which will also double for semi long distance target shooting. I was looking at the Rem700 VTR in .308 but after some research it doesn't appear to be that good and it's really on the top end ($800) of what I can save into my savings account while paying off some medical bills. I just loved the tactical look to it (kid at heart)!

So I'd like to hear suggestions of decent rifles that have good distance accuracy, will double for deer season whenever I feel like leaving the .308NM at home and something that has a semi tactical look to it, and something that won't break the bank.

Suggestions?

PS....ReRead your post, I guess your talking about ' chilcotin guns ' then, maybe try ( online ) 'wholesale sports' (Kamloops) or 'russels sports' In Calgary
 
Any of the savage 308's will get the job done. Some are heavy barrel LE versions with alot of tactical accessories ready to go.

The 12FV and FP are the best bang for the buck.

Of course, there are many other calibre choices but you knew that.

Does the $800 budget include a scope? If so you might want to consider a Stevens 200 in .308, which would still leave some money in the bank for bases, rings and optics.

I have a 12FV and it's too heavy for a deer rifle if you do any stalking over long distances, the Stevens in comparison is a much lighter and handier rifle that I could see myself walking around with all day.

Consider something like a Remington SPS Varmint in .308 with a Bushnell 3200 3-9x40. That will run you about $850 for the rifle, scope, rings and bases. +tax.

The Stevens 200 is a $300 rifle and a definite pass.

Tikka T3 HV in 6.5x55.
Bagged two deer with it last year and is a tack driver @1,000yds.
Not too heavy for carry and comes with a 5 rd mag. Out of the box with no tweaking.
Even though I'm a devout Rem 700 fan, this is the rifle I'd keep if I could only have one that would do it all and for around $1000.00.
 
Yea, a stevens in 308 with a good 3200 5-15 would get you a very good rifle. And you could upgrade the stock down the road, its the only downfall of those guns.
 
I was a little dissapointed to see the negative reference to Chilcotin Guns above.:(:(:( I work there and know for a fact that that statement is untrue.:mad::mad::mad: I am also surprised that "drache" has not approached me or any of the other staff members for advice. We are all more than willing to offer guidance especially to new shooters indeed, the store owner actively encourages us to talk to customers and potential customers at length.:):):) It is also possible that I was the examiner for his CFSC test (there are not that many in this area)in which case I would have gone to some trouble to guide and advise him on what to buy as I do with all new shooters who come to me for certification and ask for guidance.:welcome::welcome::welcome:

The gentleman who did my test was elderly (no offense if this is you) with whiteish hair and was a REALLY nice guy to deal with! Right after my exam though I asked about a .Rem 700 XCR tactical long range and if the store could bring them and if so how much. I was told that they could not give me a price quote and should be around $1500 before/after attaching on a fee for bringing the gun in and then have to wait 6 weeks for the gun to be ordered. This was on November 14th. Maybe I misunderstood this fee thing but I was in no way insulted by it as it is just standard business practice.

I am not bad mouthing CG by ANY means! Everytime I have been in that store it's like walking though a giant wet t-shirt contest for my senses and have ALWAYS been treated with respect. I would never badmouth CG! Hell I'd openly wear a CG t-shirt if I could lol!

I go into CG everytime I get into Williams Lake (which sadly is only about once every couple weeks to once a month)! My dream job is to work in CG, seriously!

My company has meetings twice a year in PG, and I always stop at Chilcotin Guns on the way up. It's a great place and the staff are very good. I just wish CG had a website. Something like Armco or Reliable, that shows a regularly updated list of stock with pics. Come to think of it, the Powderkeg in Kamloops needs a website like that too.
 
Call Al at Chilcotin Guns and see if he can help you, failing that you should give Dave or Shane at Reliable Gun in Vancouver a call.

I'd recommend a SAvage 10FP McMillan.
