I used my 30-30 for deer hunting for the first time this past week. I hunt in a heavy bush area, not much shooting over 50 yards. I have a Bushnell 3-9 40mm and find it is way too much. I am looking to replace with perhaps a 2-5 40mm or something around there and put the bigger scope on a range rifle I have. Hope this helps.
2-7x33 is about as large as I would personally go and I would leave it set at 2x when hunting. That said I have a 1.25-4.5x26 Barska on my Baikal 7.62x39 and I couldn't be happier, although I've only shot it during daylight so it may be lacking for light gathering abilities for low light shooting.
i have used the 3x9x on my 30-30s. still have a kwik site sidemount for a 1" scope provided your Winny is tapped and drilled on the left side of action.. The scope can be turned up to search for game and turned down when they are spotted close. anything more powerful is relatively too much for the bush. and if open land, the 9 x is good to about 200 yard range.
