Looking for a target rifle

Get a Stevens 200 instead if that's all you want to spend. To achieve true "target" precision, you need to look at more specialized equipment, but the Stevens are a good basic gun with the ability to upgrade and customize. Not so the H&R.

I shoot at a 200 yrd range and I am just shooting for my own enjoyment. No competition. I read a review by Chuck Hawks and the H+R Varmint doesn't have the accuracy that I was looking for. The Stevens 200 is a heck of a deal at $370 But I have to say I kinda like the Savage model 40 single shot 223 cal. laminate stock with the accu trigger and the price isn't bad at $600

Yea, dude get a Stevens 200. You can easily upgrade the barrel, stock, trigger and everything else down the road if you get more serious.

"...H+R Ultra Varmint 223 cal..." Low end hunting rifle. Ok for varmints and shooting targets for fun, but a serious target rifle it ain't.
"...Savage Model 40 single shot 223 cal..." .22 Hornet, not .223.

Back around April I asked a similar question on the hunting forum. I wanted a bolt action in 223 or Hornet to mainly target shoot out to 200 yards. I ended up with a Stevens in 223 after listening to the offered advice. I was willing to pay for a more expensive rifle but I am really glad I bought the stevens and I'm glad I picked 223. I'm now shooting out to 300 and getting MOA, nothing to the guys on this forum, but better than where I thought I'd be 6 months ago. I'm gonna upgrade the barrel and trigger and am now thinking if I practice enough over the winter I could join the 900 meter range in the spring. Stevens are a lot of fun.

Good luck.

Stevens in a 223. For a starter with the option of upgrading, can't be beat for the price. Would definately get the trigger done on it first though, heavy triggers (At least on the 2 I have been using)

I have heard that you get a lot of rifle for the $$$ with the Stevens. But I am kinda leaning towards the Savage. Partly because I don't think I want to get into upgrading. Sometimes when you start, it's hard to stop ;)

Total can be done for $1359 or maybe even less. And you get a Match barrel instead of a factory barrel. I know you will need to buy a barrel wrench and barrel blocks, but that is minor really. If you want a over-sized bolt handle and metal trigger guard again that is extra, but not much.
