So I was bored and decided to give my sks a full going over, when i took apart the bolt i noticed in the first inch inside the where the pin is housed there is rust, i tryed using g96 letting it soak then hitting it with q tips but thats the only thing i had small enough to get in there and it didn't do much since is isn't course like steel wool. Does anyone know a item that works great for scrubbing the inside of the firing pin hole on the bolt? It looks like i need to hit it with some steel wool or something but its much to hard to get into. Anyways just curious if not i'll just buy another sks and use one for parts lol.

Agreed. You'll never get it like new again as it will always be pitted from the rust. Just lightly oil it and make sure the pin shakes from within the bolt and you're good to go.

I soak it in penitrating lube on the effected areas. So now that the metal surface has some amount of penitrating oil like Kroil oil on it I allow it to penitrate the metal over night. The next day I wipe off any access oil. Then with a 17HMR bore brush and some Flitz or JB Bore Bright. Attach it to a rod length then slap it into a drill. Turn the drill to the lowest setting and buff out the rust. After a few seconds of buffing spray crab cleaner or WD40 in the firring pin channel. Then get a gas tube cleaner and clean out the firing pin channel out as best you can. I make sure that there is no resadue left over from the metal cleanning process and that it is nice and dry and reassemble.

Copied from another post. I was recently at the range and saw a guy cleaning his muzzle loader. He had these plastic pipe cleaners made especially to scrub the port where the percussion cap is put. They are yellow and have crunchy plastic bits on the surface. They are also tapered and easy to cut to the desired size. They are made by CVA and are called Muzzleloader Breech Cleaners. They are great for cleaning SKS gas port and the firing pin hole in the bolt. Bass-Pro sells them.

Unless you plan on going to a gun show and showing this rifle as your prized sks that you've polished up and brought back from norm-dom, this is all overkill. Don't waste your time, just lightly oil it and you'll b fine.

Metal will NEVER rust if its always kept with a thin layer of oil on it.

People seem to overreact about the pin on these rifles. Oil inside the bolt will not cause a slam fire, or make Stalin turn in his grave. Just oil the "female dog" and get on with life.

how am i suppose to get the steel wool up fire pin channel its so small?

Just send a few strands through the hole, and use it like dental floss, back and fourth, in and out.. making sure you rotate the flossing material in the hole, to get it good and clean with a bit of lube on it.
It should remove the rust, and she wont ##### at you for weeks... lol.:D

Just spray with degreaser and dip the whole bolt asembly in Evaporust overnight... No need for any scrubbing and all the rust will be gone... Just relube afterward.
