I am wanting a more precision rifle for both on the bench and in the field.

What I need:
lefty
detachable mag

What I want:
good accuracy out to 750 yards with great under 500
spend around $1500 without glass or customize a current rifle.

I currently own a RH Winchester Model 70 in 30.06 an a LH Savage Model 111 in 338WM. The .06 is more of a truck gun then anything. I like both calibers, but I really prefer shooting with the left hand bolt of the Savage, but I hate that it doesn't have a detachable magazine.

So, do I "fix up" the Savage or sell both and put the funds toward something new. What are your thoughts with sticking with a 338 vs 308 or 30.06 for a new gun.

Any advice or dealer recommendations would be great.

Again....what are you planning on shooting at 750 yds? When you say "good accuracy", what does this mean?

If you're not happy with your current guns then of course you should buy a new one.
Buying a new gun is better then ###! :dancingbanana:

I am shooting paper now with the 338 at 600m with about 12" groups on five shots.

I may want to shoot game at 500m

I want it better then my stock configuration now. I haven't done a thing to the rifle. No bedding, no trigger work ect.

I am not looking for a precision gun for the $1500. There is another thread with some good info on where to start in that price range.

Is it worth putting money into this Savage or should I be investing in another platform.

a few unanswered questions...

What Game do you want to hunt at 1/2 a kilometer? That determines bullet weight, and that determined cartridge.

Get a match-grade 1:9.35" or 1:10" twist barrel for your 338 and convert it to a 338 Edge. This will work with your existing rifle and will have ballistics close to a 338 Lapua Magnum.

If you do it right, and you are a competent practiced shooter, then this gun will have the potentioal for under .5MOA consistently, and the energy to take down Canadian game at 500M.

to get everything you want, you will need to sell the rifles so you can buy a new gen Savage or Tikka in a 7RM. The chamber choice for hunting is open to alot of debate but this is the chambering I chose for my LR hunting.

A 6.5X55 Swede will also do the job handily so will a bunch of other options.

If you get a new Savage with center feed mag in a LH, you will be around $700ish dollars leaving plenty to have it bedded properly and a few tweaks to improve function.

When proper handloading, you should have no issue being sub MOA with 1/2 MOA not out of the question (just keep the barrel from overheating). There are plenty of match bullets for paper punching and no shortage of hunting bullets for the furry stuff. Go out far enough and the match bullets can also be used for hunting.

If you want more accuracy, you can swap a barrel for not much money and move closer to the 1/4 min range.

If you decide you want an off the shelf that will do everything, hard to beat a Tikka. One of the most accurate factory rifles I have ever seen shooting LR were (yes, there have been a few) Tikka Varminter. Not sure if they come in LH but they do have a very nice det mag system.

Nowadays $1500 will buy you alot of gun...
