Shooting Benchrest. Not super happy with the Caldwell BR I have, but don’t want to spend several thousand either. It’s a hobby for me, not shooting in any big competitions etc. I had an Xtreme Gun tripod coax rest but found it was way too high, and the joystick bearing/mechanism wasn’t very smooth and had lots of slop/wiggle. Not sure I want to drop 2k just to find out their higher end rest has the same problem. I’ve looked at Sinclair, but the competition rests have mixed reviews, and the varmint style rests look okay, but are light, and seem to have the same design issues as the Caldwell. I’ve heard the windage adjustment is better though.

Anyway, it isn’t really the kind of thing you can try out before you buy, so I’m looking for advice from folks who have actually owned a mid-range / mid-quality front rest. Needs to have a stable footing and good windage adjustment.

I could build a base too (though I don’t really want to), so I’m open to recommendations for just a good top as well.

I appreciate your recommendations.

Thanks

A Sinclair ordered direct from Brownell cost $1200 when all is in. (exchange -shipping - taxes) a buddy just got his a couple week back.
I had one and loved it, sold it to a club member.
I now have a SEB Neo, close to 2K now.

I have been using a Hart bottom and Sinclair adjustable top for
about 20 years now, for zeroing
ing of multiple rifles it works great.
Unless a person is using a rifle with a forend that is designed for shooting off a bench rest, everthing is pretty much a compromize unless you can adjust the width of the top, and even then, a sporter forend is not the best for shooting off a bench

The Sinclair works pretty well for this .

I hace a SEB mini, with a few modifications, and it's solid. However, if you're buying one, check out the Neo and Neo X, or the Sinclair with an aftermarket rest. the ability to change elevation from behind the rifle is really nice, as when your bag settles in, or the ground crushes down in a string, you'll eventually run out of elevation on the joystick. With the mini, if it's out of arms reach, that means getting up, losening the two lock knobs, adding a few turns, recentering the joystick, then getting back behind the glass to see if you added enough elevation.... Ugh. Ideal for hard surfaces, really portable, but the mini is not up to date. Even an older Neo will suit you better, IMHO. Get to a match and check out all the rests & pods. Enjoy the journey!

The NEO ( Neo Max and New Neo-X) ) has a 3 bags top..so it can be adjusted on the spot for any forend, up to 5 inches if I remember.
