Hey there I have an SKS in a Tapco stock and I want to attach a PK-A red dot.

What's the best way to go about it? I want to keep it as low as possible, but are there specific places on the receiver I shouldn't drill to tap?

Does it matter if it's further back or forward? I would assume you would want it back more so the casings don't beat it up, but I know red dots are generally mounted more to the front.

PK-A in case you are unfamiliar, it uses an AK style mount.

I've attached a similar system on my son's SKS. I tried to mount it so that I didn't have to remove too much material from the stock - if I had mounted it too low I feared the stock would become too flimsy.

Good enough for Soviet snipers. Have you shot it @ 600 or just run the numbers? I'm seriously considering building one just for fun.

Enough that i can still use stripper clips, although it rubs against the scope when you put it in.

It does make it hit to the right at longer ranges but its only about a foot at 600m.

I just finished mounting a pk-a with the mount available at Corwin Arms.

Installation wasn't too bad. I had initially thought I would get away with using a hand drill... that didn't happen. I managed to find a drill press locally for $70.

As for drilling the receiver, I don't think it will matter much where you drill, as long as you don't interfere with the bolt (the screws you install will have to be flush). The steel seemed very strong when I drilled mine. The screws don't have a lot of material to hold onto to, but I think I would twist off an allen key before I stripped out the receiver.

The length of pull on the stock I use is a little longer (by about an inch or so). I had a look around online to see where others had mounted the rail for telescopic sights. I was thinking I'd pick up a 4x sometime down the road. I mounted mine about an inch further back than others using the original stock. I can't use stripper clips in this position, but the eye relief should be correct if I get a scope later.

I removed a bit of material where the case ejects on the right side (the angled bit to the rear of the opening). If you file it down to near vertical the casings will be ejected more to the right instead of up and forward. The pk-a sits far enough to the left though that I don't think it would be a problem.

Anyway! If you have any other q's let me know.
