looking for advice on locating a Winchester or Browning 1895

This is not a WTB post, however I am looking for a bit of advice from fellow hunters and enthusists in locating a newer Winchester or Browning Model 1895 rifle. These Winchester and Browning 1895s were made in the 1980s and 1990s in .405, .30-06 and .270 (as well as a few other calibres) and were virtual replicas of the old late 1800s and early 1900s Winchester 1895 lever actions rifles.

I'd like to try to find one of these for use next season as I have always loved the design but want the reliability of a newer rifle.

Either way if anyone could provide advice (either here or via PM) or if you've spotted one new or used somewhere in Canada please let me know. I'd be indebted.

Winchester 1895

Calgary location of Wholsale Sports has/had a few Winchester SRC 1895 in 30-06. These are recent production w/ the Tang Safety. Price was 1799.00 give or take. Not sure if this is what you were wanting.............

I handled one, nice rifles. I hate being broke.

Any Winchester will be old stock since they're out of the rifle business. No Browning anymore either. However, Shooter's Choice in Waterloo has a vintage Win 1895 in .303 British for $695. The newer Winchesters were a limited issue only.

Buttons that is 1 of the biggest mistakes you will make is to think a new rifle is more reliable than an old 1. I would bet on an old 95 any day. No tang safety and probably less parts

Well, I ain't selling you mine. Been in the family over a hundred years now.

My advice would be to find a BLR in .358 Winchester (like my wife has) and hunt with that until you find that '95 you're dreaming of. Then keep the BLR as well, of course.

I actually prefer the handling of the BLR over the '95, although I find the new BLR's with the alloy frames and pistol grips to be pretty fuggly. Ditto for the ones built for the longer rounds i.e. 30/06. But as much as I do like and admire my wife's BLR, it just doesn't have the same appeal and hunting with my grandfather's '95 that has been going out hunting with the men in our family for over a hundred years.

I might pay $1700 or whatever for a new Model 95 in .405 caliber - but not for a 30-06. My opinion only, of course.

If there was no family history involved, and it was a straight design/handling decision rather than an appeal to tradition or whatever, I'd take a BLR over the '95. The .358 Win version is short, handy, and the .358 Win round, when reloaded rather than the factory standard ammo, has some really serious thump going for it.

Of course, if you've handled a BLR and have decided you simply don't like them, then I guess you'll just have to keep looking for one for sale.
 
I have a 405, but not in the Winchester lever -- it's a Ruger #1. Love it! Shoots great! Apparently, the design of the Winchesters and replicas makes them pretty stout in the recoil department. Just something to consider.
