I'm looking to purchase my first AR, however I don't want to add another caliber to my collection. (Hence the desire for an AR in 7.62x39)
I have been looking at two in particular but info is pretty scarce.

Budget for the rifle and scope mount is ~1300$
As much as I'd like a PWS I can't afford it.

The Windham weaponry ar15 that comes in 7.62x39 or the NEA that SFRC is selling are the rifles I've been looking at.

I'm a lemon magnet so all the chatter about NEAs QC issues is putting me off of their product.

Can anyone tell me about the windham weaponry 7.62x39 ar15 (are they reliable? Junk? Worth the price?)
Same questions for the NEA.

Thanks in advance for any input.

I believe I saw a review of an NEA one. It was pretty good. However I don't know much about this platform (7.62X39 in an AR style) but the main concern is it's not like an AK or an SKS where you can neglect to clean the barrel but the gas tube needs the most attention per shooting session for cleaning. I fear most of corrosion in the gas tube (which is not easily removable or cleanable if direct gas impingement rather than piston).

Don't get me wrong, the PWS has a removable piston gas tube and is probably worth saving for.
As for the Windham in 7.62X39, you may need to be a guinea pig and try it out and tell us all about it.

Whatever you get, make sure the bolt is specifically designed for x39 and not just an adapted AR bolt. The x39 is steeply tapered and generates excessive bolt thrust that has a tendency to shear lugs off.

MGI Hydra is the only one I would consider given it uses AK mags. It is however a little over your budget and I have yet to see any reviews from local people on it.

I too am in the same boat. I have narrowed it down to the CMMG Mutant or the Hydra. Haven't decided which one yet. I like how they both accept AK47 mags

My Windham x39 is in the mail, and so is the LMT x39 bolt. I hope this to be a winning combo for a x39 AR.:)

All I can say about the Windham is that we have sold about a dozen in the last 2 months and no one that I am aware of has had any issues. We have sold a ton of the 556 Windham's without an issue.

I built one (in sig pic). Had issues with surplus with hard primers because of the 5.56 firing pin.
Ever since I switched to new production non corrosive, have no more problems. I assume the bolt will shear off a lug after a few thousand rounds since it just is a modified 5.56 bolt

I have a Leupold vx2 in 2-7x33 scope thats just collecting dust. I think it would pair nicely with the caliber.

What kind of scope mounts would work?
I was looking at the Leupold IMS or the Burris P.E.P.R.
