So I've been compiling a list of things to add to my library and I'm looking for books on North American game animal behaviour and/or hunting techniques for large game, small game, and birds (upland and waterfowl). It seems like I'm always learning new things when it comes to hunting different species so I'm trying to find some decent compilation volumes that cover general behaviours and hunting techniques for all game species.

Thanks!

So an update on this for anyone else interested in this topic. I did a lot of looking and there's really not much on the market. I recieved a few books from Amazon today so here's a mini review.

'The ultimate guide to hunting skills, tactics, and techniques' by Jay Cassell.

This book is apparently a collection of magazine articles compiled together(which you wouldn't know from the description). It's heavily weighted towards white tail/eastern hunting and most other north american species are covered by proxy in other articles like the bowhunting section. It's very haphazardly laid out, but to be fair, it's good information for what's there. Just don't expect exhaustive discussion unless it's whitetail.

The cookbook section is actually good and includes a decent ground jerky section. The hunting stories are just that and the big game records are not really useful.

'National Audubon society field guide to mammals'

This book is actually more of what I was looking for. It is a great field guide to identification of tracks and animal. It includes ranges and general behaviours of all species. A little superfluous when it comes to just hunting, but it does cover everything that's not a bird.

Also, while I was in chapters today, I browsed a set of two books that I think would be the best I've seen on general hunting species information and hunting techniques. It was called 'The Complete Guide to Hunting, Butchering, and Cooking Wild Game: Volume 1: Big Game' by Steven Rinella and the same title in volume 2: small game and fowl.

I recieved The second of the Steven Rinella books for Chistmas from my wife. A good read so far and helpful for a novice hunter like myself.

Read Rinella’s book on his bison hunt—‘The American Buffalo’ outstanding book!
Also read anything you can get your hands on by Valerie Giest or Dan Flores

Three books I have which are excellent are:

The Hunter’s Field Guide to the Game Birds and Animals of North America, by Robert Elman. My edition is the revised edition from ‘82, it’s a small size hardcover that’s 645 pages long, lots of good info. Might be harder to find, I’m not sure if it’s in print currently.

Field Guide to Upland Birds and Waterfowl, by Christopher S. Smith. It’s about 150 pages with lots of illustrations and nice descriptions on food, habitat, geographic distribution etc. It easily fits in a pack or pocket for field use. $19.95, a buddy gifted it to me. New printing, so it should be easy to find online

The last book I reach for as well is not hunting/behaviour related but it’s very good reference, it’s a small soft cover pocket book of animal tracks. Animal Tracks of British Columbia by Ian Sheldon & Tamara Hartson, $9.95 and in circulation, about 150 pages.

Try Safari Press.
They have a large selection of books and dvd's on hunting of animals from all over the world by many of the great hunters and writers, and the firearms they used.
