Hello everyone, looking for some advice. I’m a fairly new hunter, I’ve gone out a couple times with an outfitter for turkey on private land that they have been hunting for years. For the first time, I’m going out onto crown land, on my own, to try and put what I’ve learned so far to use. I have a box call that I’ve been using for the last couple of weeks(while annoying the wife at home) and I have a couple decoys (nothing fancy). Does anyone have any advice or info while on hunting on crown land? Etiquette(other than cleaning up after myself), other hunters that may be in the area?
Or really anything that a new hunter can learn.

Any info/advice is appreciated.

Thanks

Doesn't matter if you're hunting private or crown, respect the land and leave either the same or nicer than when you got there. If I'm in my way out I'll pick up trash. If you bump into someone at the entrance of crown or some other public (I hunt Simcoe county forest), tell them where you're going, find out where they're going, and set boundaries. I'll exchange cell numbers as well so I can text to say I'm leaving and vice versa. Good idea not to go chasing calls for safety reasons. Last fall I was chilling on a ridge and started to hear the most awful yelping I've ever heard. Thought it was some new hunter practicing his calling, it was terrible... and on the move through the bush. Who the hell does that?.. Anyway, comes up the ridge behind me and sure enough it was a real hen. Just goes to show you that if you think your calling is terrible, it's probably fine.

Thanks appreciate the info. Never thought about exchanging numbers but will definitely give it a try if I run into anyone.

Don't give out to much information. Be polite and courteous and if they ask about where you are hunting be very general. Much like fishing, if people know you're having success (or seeing game) they will roll up on your area and hunt it.

During my first year deer hunting my buddy and I bumped into some other hunters. It gets accidentally mentioned we've been scouting several areas hard all year. Throughout the week this same group was following our quad tracks in the fresh snow and hunting right on top of us.

If your hunting crown, Go scout at sunrise a few times before sunrise and find where the turkeys are roosting (listening for Gobbles and find where they fly down too)

Opening day you will want to be close to where the turkeys are roosted, might help with setting up and calling birds towards you (Not having other hunters between you and where the turkeys are)

If hunting pressured land try mid day. Most hunters only hunt the am hours. Plenty of times ive gone out midday and overlooked passage ways and fence lines with no call and no dekes and have done well. Turkey move thruout the day

Use and hunting app with a mapping feature. Scout for gobbling birds in the ams before the season gets going. Pin as many gobbling Toms as you can so you have options. If someone is already in a spot move on to your next pinned turkey. It saved the day lots of times for me over the years. Scout multiple spots….Best advice GO EARLY!

I agree but don’t waste your time in. Make sure you are hunting where turkeys wanna be. And try to beat other hunters to those places. It’s not a race but being ahead of the curve helps a lot.

Scout the area you plan on hunting and look for sign, footprints in soft ground, turkey feathers, piles of leaves where turkeys have been walking through lifting leaf litter to find bugs.

If you dont see any of that, or like others said, dont hear any turkeys gobbling or feeding, then pick a different spot.

Also crown land means other hunters you might not know are out there, have an orange flag around your decoys until you set them up and back away. Make sure you are protected by sitting up against a tree that is wider than yourself ect.

If you encounter another hunter, communicate with words and dont wave or move to get their attention.

No reaping! Lol
