Looking for best pump-shotgun for $400

The mossberg and the 870 are greats gun. Still i prefer the Mossberg because he fit better to me,the safe&slide release are well located and they are very reliable. I have a 590 12g, a 500 12g and one in .410. I never never had any problems with them.
My 1st pump(1989) was a Win. 120 Ranger. Still have & still hunt with it. Since then I've picked up a few Mossberg 500's which I consider very robust shotguns for the price.
My newest is a 20ga with bird & cantilver deer bbl. the other 3 are 12, 20 & 410...great pump @ a great price.
You know it's a real shame that a reasonably low cost shot-gun can't be purchased at a reasonable cost anymore. You would be better off buying a good used Win Mod 12,Wingmaster,ithica,or even mossy!

When your driving the heavy brush for spooky deer it's all about "fast & sure" target acquisition.
I have a Remington Model 870 with a 26" barrel I normally use for field pheasant hunting that swings & points like "a pig on a shovel" compared with the Dominion Arms "Grizzly" 870 clone with the 12.5" barrel in the thick alders & switches we drive whitetail deer in.
And with a cheapie shotgun who gives a hoot about the dings & scratches from the inevitable tumbles & falls incurred during "deep & dirty" brush hunting.
The Grizzly is a hunting TOOL in the full sense of the word.

Get a used 870 Wingmaster instead of a new Express. Most of these were made with a full choke, so you would want to have it reamed out to modified choke for waterfowling with steel shot and to give more open patterns for clay shooting and upland hunting.
Winchester Model 12s are a real classic, but my understanding is that the barrels are too soft for steel shot.
