Hey fam!

My kid has been using my Ruger 10/22 for awhile now and she thinks she wants to start upgrading it now that she is comfortable with it and to maybe even try competing with it. She wants to upgrade it on her own with her own money, and I am trying to support her on that.

So with that in mind, I am looking for solid upgrades for a mostly stock Butler Creek 10/22 with a heavy barrel. It has a DLASK receiver on it, but I think all the internals are stock.

What should our first upgrades be on this rifle to improve accuracy and such KEEPING IN MIND THAT MY 14 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WILL BE PAYING FOR ALL THE UPGRADES?

The KIDD trigger below is great, but way out of her price range lol

Cheers,
Bishop

Dlask already make a nice product

Does it really need anything for the type of shooting its utilized for ?

A nicer trigger is always a good enhancement but at a cost of 20 or 25% of the rifles value, I'm not sure if it qualifies as budget friendly.

Bolt upgrades are a nice choice as well, but cheaper options would be extended charging handle, auto bolt release, tuffer buffer bolt stop pin, VQ extractor, new titanium firing pin, upgraded ejector.

There's a whole grocery listo of options available.

As far as competition, it's pretty hard to beat a bolt gun

Make sure you're using ammo the rifle likes. Buy 50 rounds each of several likely types and shoot test targets and compare. Take note of any that show any habit of misfeeding in that rifle too, you don't want that.

Depending on shooting style desired, a good sling or a bipod and shooting mat could be helpful.

A 14-year-old should be good on iron sights. Prescription safety glasses may be relevant but a lot of people are good with regular glasses on a .22 especially considering the 10/22's enclosed rear.

The aftermarket BX-10/22 trigger is a good economical upgrade, especially if / when the go on sale at Cabelas. If you're handy, you can polish up the trigger a bit to smooth it out - you can do that with either the stock trigger or the BX 10/22 trigger.

Also, another +1 to taking a Mapleseed. A lot of students of a Mapleseed have seen improvement and/or identified how to self-correct in their own practice sessions.

Trigger is a best 1st, but not budget. A trigger job would be the best option.

A better barrel, but again not a budget option as they are starting to get ridiculous. The Dlask carbon barrels are nice, when they have stock.

A different stock?? Some great light options out there, but they start getting up in $$ as well.

A Volquartsen target hammer with bushings will create a two pound trigger. Crisp and clean!........:)

Unfortunately Midway USA does not ship to Canada, you will need an American address to achieve this. In saying that, Brownells does:

These are of course in US funds.

A stock that fits her, look for a take off birch stock, cut to her length of pull , flip flop butt pad, hog out barrel channel to fit the existing barrel, have her paint it her favorite colour.

Best rimfire scope you can afford, parallax adjusted for 22 lr or adjustable parallax

BX Trigger or home trigger job

As already mentioned test to find out what ammo the barrel likes

Shoot as much as you can afford

Lots of good advice on rimfirecentral.com

I agree with Shakyontarget that the best $-friendly would be an MCarbo spring kit. Polishing the action parts to smooth the trigger, too, just time spent. And a $100-ish rimfire scope ca 3-9x would help for targets but not for Mapleseed.
And I'd suggest you check out Rimfire central .com for suggestions. That Whole Forum was established for 10/22s, and now covers most rimfire shooting guns.

I've got a BX trigger and a stock 10-22 trigger, polished both and the stock trigger is as good as the BX.
Plenty of YT videos on how to do that.
I switched my 10-22 extractors too.
Plenty of upgrades can be made over time.

You can make a high-end 10/22 if you replace all the parts, and as a bonus you can re-create the original 10/22 out of the spare parts left over, but there may be diminishing returns. Probably best to only do a few significant things like the trigger, learn the fundamentals with the rifle you have, and set funds aside beyond that to eventually pick up a premium bolt-action .22.

What kind of competitions?

If she wants to do PRS/ORPS/CSPS/NRL she would have a blast, but then a decent scope is the most important thing for her to have fun and learn, but that is probably more in birthday present territory.

If you could lend her a scope from another rifle, she could buy the rings and bases? An MDT peanut shooting bag would also be a good thing if she wants to do PRS type competitions.
