Tristanium. many times the name which appears on a gun is the name of the retailer, not the manufacturer. When a gun cannot be identified by name, the proof marks on the gun are the key to its identification. The proof marks are to be found underneath the barrels and on the action flats. The barrels must be removed from the gun in order to see them. On a SxS, this is a simple operation - remove the fore end, and open the gun. The barrels will come right off. Now look for the proofs, and either take pictures or describe them in detail. (If you have pictures of the proof marks, you can send them to sharptail@shaw.ca and I will post them here). This will reveal the country of origin of the gun, and possibly an approximate date of construction. Sometimes, in addition to proof marks, there is a makers mark which can identify the builder.

The exception is American made guns, the U.S. has never had a proof house, but most American makers put inspection stamps and other markings on their guns which can help identify them.
