I have been hunting for the past 5 years near and around the Calgary area. I have been able to spot white tail, Mule deer, Moose, antelope, But I am yet to find a good location for Elk. I keep hearing people saying you want Elk go to wmu 304 305, went down there all i find is Hunters and a whole lot of them. I don't mind the drive farther and sleeping out in the bush, but where? Any help on places i should look and focus my direction would be greatly appreciated.

well, i 've seen a lot in the off season, but not where you are- i use a camera- you need to get further south and closer to the bc border- that's all i'm going to say b/c i don't want you to spoil it for me- west of the "parks" - they're also VERY tricky- you have to get up before dawn , and be on site just as the sun is begining to break while they're still in their beds- there's a fellow by the name of giest at the university that is the foremost authority on elk-take the hint

See them often when I'm out hiking along the Red Deer and Panther Rivers - west of the 940. Don't know the wmu though I understand that portions of the Upper Red Deer (nearer Ya Ha Tinda) is a closed conservation area - no huting within 300m of the road? I'm sure someone else may have better info on this, all I know is that I see Elk there!

that's b/c that's where the c/os train and keep their horses- some folks can't tell THE DIFFERENCE

305 is horrible with people. You got to learn to bugle.

Go further north along the slopes. Elk populations can be very spotty in some areas. All due respect, most hunters don't give up their secret honey spots, especially for Elk. You need to Buddy up with someone who gets their animal every year, not people who occasionally get one. Its all about method and location. If you approach Elk hunting in the same manner that you approach deer hunting, all you will see is tracks. Learning to call them is a big plus.

If it's anything like hunting elk in Saskatchewan, you do 4 to 5 days of scouting before the season and shoot your elk in the first half hour of opening morning. if you don't succeed opening day, it becomes tougher as the season progresses because the elk go nocturnal and or clear out of areas where they are pressured. i.e. areas with easy access.

You only see Elk when your hunting for something else. JayT and I were chasing coyotes on CFB Wainwright a couple of Saturdays ago, and ran into a bruiser bull Elk munching contently on brough tips.

Water Valley is a good place, but many hunters know it so it can get a little crazy. Grand Prairie I go every year and get my bull. Weather in September can be a little pain in the butt, but luv the idea I can get out in a t-shirt :)

Hey thanks for the reply, I have been down to water valley but most of the property is Private owned and i haven't had any luck getting permission. to the area you hunt in grand prairie, how long is the drive from calgary? and is it crown land or private? i have heard of guys going out that way and getting some nice game, what would your advice be for someone who has never been out to that area?

GP has game in every direction. Both Crown and private-game on both. Have never had too much problems getting permission up there. You need to do some scouting though. They move around a fair amount.
