No worries just curious because in semi there are a lot more 3" options. But what is he using it for Trap, skeet hunting? Duck, goose, crocodile? Will help with shooting you some suggestions.

Good point...you can shoot out past 70 yards with those guns due to the far superior patterning....at least 1/8" tighter.....Why not go 10 gauge?
I'll third the versamax. It isn't available in wood as far as I know and it doesn't fit someone of smaller stature very well but if you get the sportsman model it's right around the 1000 mark for price. I've had mine for 6 months and have probably put 750 rounds through it with no issue. Also the 870 tube extensions will fit it if you want to make it fit 5 3 1/2" shells in the tube.
