Looking for Garand Friendly 30.06

Garand friendly ?

Nothing wrong with 30.06 from the local store (aside from price), some will tell you not to shoot heavy (180 gr. and above). There is plenty of 150 gr. offerings out there.

If you really want to be friendly with your garand You can always start reloading and mimic the original 150 gr. ball ammo load from WWII moving at about 2700 fps.

147 and 150g. Winchester factory ammunition leaves the barrel in between 2900 and 3000 pfs

Which you may get away with for a while......that is until your op-rod seperates.

Consult the CMP website for NRA approved handload presssures, with powder choices friendly to the Garand gas port pressure.

Did you read the rest of my post...? you know the part about the 150 gr. load at 2700 pfs which is fairly light......

Either way. Id like to know how many have seen a Garand op-rod separate from shooting modern factory ammo.......probably run out and ammo and money before it would happen.

Mostly my point is......Good luck finding Milsurp 30.06 Ball ammo for your Garand.

Well, if he's stuck with factory stuff and worried about his Op rod, then he can disable his gas system and use it the Garand as a manual repeater.

Good luck with the Garand.

"...disable his gas system and use it the Garand..." You can't do that with an M1.
Federal makes a 150 grain load specifically for the M1 Rifle. Haven't a clue who carries it though.

I bought modern factory stuff with my previous Garand and it bent the operating rod.

Afterwards I found out from some of the guys at Wholesale in Calgary that the the modern factory stuff is too hot or whatever and is not appropriate for the Garand.

My experience kinda confirms that and I'm being way more careful with the new Garand.

The only stuff I've found so far is that Hornady has a Garand specific Match load but very pricey.

The shooting edge had some bulk 06 in 500 round case for $450. it specifically said for feeding m1's . i can't remember who made them or what the weight was :(

Here's a question, other than watching/waiting for a bent oprod, what tool/technique can be used to measure how much pressure is being applied to the oprod on each cycle?

As far as I know the only way to be sure is to make your own ammo and load it to 2700 fps with medium burning powder, which should give you a non-damaging pressure. Avoiding slow burning powder is key.
So far this has worked well in my Garand and I've fired hundreds of shots through mine in less than a year of ownership.

the other thing that could be done is to simply change the gas ports on the Garand. Sure, modern loads produce more pressure, but if you loosen up the gas system so that more gas vents, you're taking strain off the moving parts.
