I am new to shooting, and was wondering what would be a good choice if I wanted a 12 gauge, semi-auto or pump action shotgun for $600 and under.

You will have a hard time finding a NEW semi-auto shotgun for under $600. So if you really want a semi-auto, you should be able to find a used one.

$600 for a pump shotgun gives you lots of options. This spring I bought a brand new Stoeger P350 in camo with a 23" barrel as well as a 28" barrel for $500 plus tax. This is a great combo for any hunting situation. When I was younger I had a Remington 870 Express Mag combo, again 23" and 28" barrel. Once again this can be had for about $500 plus tax. Great hunting combo, but I wouldn't want to be firing 100 shots at the skeet range with it.

You will have to more specific with your intended use as there are so many options available.

You should go checkout Frontier Firearms up at the top. They have a nice selection of shotguns for a pretty good price. I'm a lefty so I prefer the Mossy's cause of the thumb safety. What is your primary use going to be?

I wanted to keep my pricetag to around $500 but ended up paying $650 for the Benelli Supernova. Great pump, and you get what you pay for. I had narrowed it down to the 870 Wingmaster which goes for around 750, and the Benelli. The Wingmasters are nice and can be found used for much cheaper. I had seen one used for about $500.

It really does depend on what kind of shooting you are doing rather it be tactical, birds, or clays.

If you don't care whether its used or not, you could get a used 870 Wingmaster. Some of the older ones go for under $400 i've seen

Stay away from entry level and off shore if possible exsample 870 express or stoger New BPS best for the buck, Bennelli Nova, Reminton Wingmaster. You should beable to find a Remington 1187 for that price range, Winchester SX 2 or SX4maybe a few more bucks. Buy Quality once.

Used 870 Wingmaster. Mine cost about $300 with a 28" remchoke barrel, 21" rifle sighted barrel, and the stock 30" full choke barrel. That was about 8 years ago.

I picked one up for my wife 2 years ago. It cost us $350 and came with a skeet barrel (great for grouse!). I then picked up a 28" remchoke barrel on the EE for around $100.

I'm very happy with my Remington M887 Nitro. Bought it last year for $350 and it hasn't missed a beat, shooting anything and everything well. It has a recoil pad that works really well even with 3.5" magnum loads. I really think it's the best value for money in a pump shotgun.
You can get Mossberg 930 and 935 semi autos for around $500 if I recall correctly. I really didn't like my 935 though, because it wouldn't cycle all 2.75" shells, but you may like it.

When did they come out with the SX4? I will want one to complete my collection.

If I did get a shotgun I would use it mostly for skeet, target shooting, and sometimes my gun club hosts a room clearing competition ( you bust down the door go into a make-shift room, shoot the dummys and then get out). I would go hunting with it occasionally.

Nice to have someone with nothing better to do than edit postings covey ridge.

I do not have someone with nothing better to do, although I often have nothing better to do. Lighten up a bit. Anyway I am anxiously waiting for newer models and would not want to miss a SX4.

Great Choice. IMO this is the pump action that all others should be judged against. I wouldn't part with my wingmaster for anything. I have 3 barrels for it (Fixed Full Choke, Rem Choke 2 bead and a Rifled Slug Barrel). Great choice for a first gun as it will do everything for you besides make breakfast but it will get you the main ingredients. HAHA.

Overall get a wingmaster or if you want to spend a little less get a 3.5" super magnum express. Not quite the same finish and a little harder of an action to work (not as smooth) but after its broken in its a great piece as well.

Never had a mossberg but anyone I know with them has not complained.

Ithaca makes a good shotgun if you can get your hands on an old deerslayer

If you can find one winchester model 97 is right up there in my mind with the wingmaster. Open hammer and made like a swiss watch which is also its downfall as it is very complicated.

There are so many other models out there and some higher end companies are making competitively priced shotguns to keep up with the rems and mossbergs. But another thing to consider is the 870 platform be it wingmaster or express are simple, rugged, modular (so many interchangalbe parts). Even if you want you could buy an express and if its your thing you could even go the tacticool route by putting rails, pistol grips, folding stocks, tube extensions, red dot/scopes, the list goes on.

The nice thing about the wingmaster is its a gun you will be proud to pass down to a young lad who can hopefully pass it down when he is older. ..
