If you are wondering if it is antique or not, all Model three frames were made before 1898 and are all classed as antique. The DA model 3's were made from 1881 to 1913 1-54668 so with a 3 digit serial number would most likely be in the 1880"s. S&W did not send out the pistols in sequencential number but were random of the shelf. However the earlier the serial number the more likely it is to be in the 1880's Hope this helps. rigrat

The S&WHF letter will show when and where the gun was shipped and how it was configured at the time it was shipped. As stated in Post #2, it will not say when the gun was assembled. Since the frames were manufactured prior to 1898 antique status should, by rights, be based on calibre, as it is my understanding that the frame is considered the firearm, and not what is attached to it, but this not always the case with the RCMP Technical Division.
