Looking for help with the basics.

Hi, this is my first post on these forums.

I'm 17, and my name is Tyler. Tomorrow, March 26th I turn 18. My father passed away when I was younger and never took me to do any of this. I've always had an interest in guns and never thought about it until now because I thought I was too young. I went over the FAQs and some of the terms I became dumbfounded just looking at. Although I knew at least 80% of them.

Basically, I'm looking for help or a complete from start - finish guide on obtaining a license and a rifle. I prefer the look and feel of an AR-15 (I have held an AR-15 A3) And I don't know if I need a PAL-R, or PAL.

I also don't know where to start or look where I am, I live on Vancouver Island.

Any help in much appreciated.

Welcome to CGN Tyler! For an AR-15 you will need an RPAL but it's really not that much harder to get than a normal PAL. You should find a lot of information on how to approach getting your Firearms License in this thread http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?t=99609.

Even if you didn't have an AR-15 in mind most people would still suggest that you get your RPAL. I originally got a PAL only and then kicked myself for not getting RPAL at the same time so I went back 6 months later and did the RPAL test.

The pal/rpal course is dead easy. Don't worry to much about it, the instructors will walk you through everything, if you can remember your name you'll do just fine. The wait for your licence is the hardest part! Start looking for a club you will like in the mean time, restricteds can only be used at an approved range in Canada.

I assume, being 18. My 18 year old friends aren't sufficient References as well. I should borrow some of my mothers?

If your friends are of age they're fine. Just pick two that have no criminal record. I'm not sure but I was told they can do a check on your references and it doesn't look good if they're drug dealers and pimps. Again, I'm not sure on that but better safe than sorry.
