Hi guys, I didn't know where else on the site to post this so I stuck it in here.

I'm wondering what type of events some of you put off or attend at your clubs for guys that shoot regular scoped hunting rifles, I'm trying to get some ideas so that I can hopefully help get a shoot or two on the go at our local club for guys like me that just shoot hunting rifles.

The club already puts off some events for guys shooting hunting rifles but I just found out that if I could come up with any ideas for events that I'd possibly be able to get a shoot on the go if the schedule allows it, my problem is I haven't been around organized shooting very long so coming up with ideas for fun events that would draw some shooters in is proving to be difficult.

So anyone with any ideas that fit what I'm asking for would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, Pat

Oh and if there's a better place here on the site to open this thread please let me know. Thanks again.

Guelph does a rifle match once or twice a year... I've shot it once, so if anyone knows when they happen, let me know :)

Two classes, iron sights, and optics. Must be .243 and greater caliber. For each class you shoot 10 rounds at 50 yards standing unrested, and 10 rounds rested. It's lots of fun.

I've got a M38 Mauser that should do well in irons, and a Remi 750 that should work for optics. :)

One of my local clubs used to do a hunting rifle match. It consisted of 5 rds standing (sling only) at 100m; 5 rds sitting at 100m (used to be sling only, but since most people couldn't shoot worth a sh*t they made bipods legal for this position--sad if you ask me); and then 5 rds prone at 200m with front support allowed.

A template was used for scoring--10 pts for the 1" center, going down 1 point for every inch diameter outward. Outside of the 5 pt ring, zero points given. A good, simple match without an outrageous round count. Fewer rounds mean that every round is worth more/counts for more, so ya' better not blow it......

Think about Metallic Silhouette... It is thehunter event/match.

While the initial set-up can be intensive/expensive to some clubs (rails, targets, etc.) it is a blast... Please exercise caution... It is also addictive!

"High power" is generally held out to 500m... But it can be scaled back... Or just start with Chickens at 200m... "Cowboy Lever Action" is shot at 50, 100, 150, 200m. There's even a .22 and handgun versions.

Google it, and have some fun... Check out the NRA site for official rules.

Most of all, enjoy, safely!

Shooting reduced F-Class targets with 22s at 100 & 200 yards would be a lot of fun.

I was also told about an "Egg Shoot" done at one of the clubs in Southern Ontario that sounded like a lot of fun; 10 hard boiled eggs at unknown distance with 10 shots with a 15 minute time limit, IIRC.

This is along the lines of what I have been wanting to put on for years:

This assumes that there are butts, but can be modified if not.

Deer shaped targets, reduced if required, and partially obscured. Hit a branch, it is a miss. Some quartering towards, away, etc. You get what pops up, not prior knowledge.

From a non-ready position, you have 3 seconds to make a shot. Use whatever bolt on gold plating you want.

Moving targets.

Make shot in 5 seconds on the correct target. Did the target that appeared say WT, or MD.

10 rnd group. Start standing, get kneeling for each of the 10 shots. You get 5 sec to get into position and shoot each time.

10 rnd group. Start standing, get seated for each of the 10 shots. You get 5 sec to get into position and shoot each time.

1K run through whatever bush in the area, then 10 shots from standing 100m.

All gear used has to be carried all day throughout the match, including a weight representative of whatever you brought to "hunt" with.

Use whatever rifle you want so long as it is legal to hunt with.

This is the shooting stage I built for a friendly shoot at Barrie Gun Club. The yellow paper was for sighting and warmup, I gave 3 min but next time will be 5 min. The white paper was 1 round per diamond. Below are 3 ping pong balls filled with water and glued to golf tees to get them up off the wood. When hit they fly up in the air, it's pretty spectacular. There are also 3 chunks of ice died blue. They absolutely explode when hit. Next time I will put a barrier between them as some got knocked off from hitting one next to it. The balloon is large enough that you can see it from the distance you are shooting at and stops the time. Scoring is based on hits and time just like IPSC I used an IPSC scoring app on my phone to score the event (use minor instead of major class). Scoring rings on paper are 5, 3, 1. Balloon, ping pong balls and ice cube are 10 points but also a 10 point penalty if left standing.

Target

Copy or make this target, to get a polar bear shooter (handle) you have to hit gold polar bear not the silver part of toonie at all three distances. There are fellows with Polar bear at 100 & 200 no one yet with all 3 distances.
