Looking for ideas on a new precision rifle in 308

That's the route I would go, and upgrade the stock later when you have saved more money. Have the gunsmith rework the factory Remington trigger until you have more $$$ to spend on that as well.

Trued 700 action currently on the EE: $600
barrel: $500
Gunsmith chambering and bedding: $300

Leave you with $350 for the stock and bottom metal, and trigger. $1750 will be tricky, would have to get lucky on the EE.

Did shoot my brand new one last week.
Mounted a Swarzoski 5X25X52, zeroed it from the piknic table.

At 100 mètres with GMM 168gr, it's an easy sub MOA rifle.

Cheaper and more common round just figured was a better route for myself.

Not sure 308 is cheaper than 6.5. you can walk into any Cabela's and have tons of affordable 6.5 on the shelves.

I went with the blued since it's cheaper and I don't have much need for weather resistance for a precision rifle. If it get's wet I'll just wipe it down at the end of the day.

In my limited data set (one of each) my stainless cycles more smoothly than the blued. Not a big difference, but something I noticed. Could just be my rifles, so YMMV.
Both are easily sub moa, with both printing groups into the half inch range with factory ammo when I turn down the suck. For accuracy I'd call them equal.
If budget is a concern, go with the blued. If I was going to buy one tomorrow I'd be paying the extra for stainless.

These exist? Searched quite a bit for one and it seems 20 inch is the norm. Couldn’t find 308 with a 24 inch barrel

I too would go stainless if you can find one. The bolt with run smoother and faster than the blued one.

As well, I can share a short anecdote. I hunt with my .308 CTR (20” barrel) and had wrapped the barrel in that camo mesh like tape. I had it out all fall in various conditions and several times the rifle got wet. I never thought to remove the tape and for my idiocy I was rewarded with some rust spots on the blued barrel. Maybe the same thing would have happened with a stainless barrel but maybe not.

I’ll be picking up a CTR in 6.5 Creedmoor and it will be a stainless model.

I was in the same boat a while back, but with a slightly lower budget. I ended up with a savage model 10 GRS. I haven't been able to get out to the range yet, but its feels great and has a threaded barrel to play with brakes.

I've got a Gen 1 Milspec .308 and it shoots very well . I was shooting it yesterday at 710 yards off a bipod and it was hitting a 7" x 9" plate with no difficulty in a 10 mph full value crosswind . They are a good , solid rifle that shoots better then most can shoot it IMO .

I have to wonder what rangefinder and Kestrel device you used to make those shots with a 10 mph wind, just curious.

Used Remington Gen. 1 5R Milspec .308. Toss in a trigger Tech Special and get shooting. The stock is fine, don't worry about it. Can't beat it for the price IMO.

Cant decide on what to get budget is around 1750
Please help was going to get the mossberg mvp but everyone gave horrible reviews. Ruger precision gen 3 slightly out of budget.
Saw the howa m1500 heavy barrel package which looks great. Im just kinda at a loss here was set on the mvp but watched too many reviews and now cant get it.
