Just picked up an old Marlin 444S. Mounted on top was an old Tasco optic marked more or less exactly:

Tasco #611W
Fully Coated
Opti Centred
2-5x
Japan-A-74-5

Seems to be in good shape, and the optics are remarkably clear for what I'm guessing is a 70's era scope.

Can anyone else share any information about this old scope? Keeper? Pre-junk-phase or boat anchor?

I've got a Tasco "Super Sniper" 3x-9x on my .270 Win that is made in Japan, and dates back to 1967 or 1968. Got it with the gun from my Father In Law. Works great, been using it for deer the last couple of years. I'm 2 for 2 :D

If it looks clear, then I say keep it and have fun with it!

Thanks gang. I tried it out yesterday, worked pretty well! It holds zero across the magnification range and the eye relief was huge. Good thing this is a rather short scope, as the recoil on the .444 Marlin is, um, stout!

This old Tasco is defintely a keeper!
