I am trying to figure out some of the history of this gun. I was intrigued when I saw the U.S. Property stamp. I understand that it was part of the lend lease plan, but do not understand what that means. Any help would be much appreciated. The yellow printing is what I think the stamp is, but it is hard to decipher. Thanks in advance.

What you have is a Lee-Enfield No4Mk1* rifle, probably one that was made in the US (I'm guessing by Savage) for use by Allied troops during ww2. The rifle was re-worked into a "hunting" rifle after it was surplussed, hence the "surrey" marking on the barrel, which I'm guess is the company/gunsmith that chopped it up.

You have a Savage made No.4 Mk1*. Savage made them under the Lend Lease program during WWII for the Brits. They technically remained the property of the US, hence the "US PROPERTY" stamping, although most they were sold or given to the Brits after the war. Yours was most likely given to the Brits, and then sold to the civilian Market. The "BNP" (British Nitro Proof), the "2.222"", the "18.5 tonnes per []"" "Surrey" ect are all proof marks that are required for firearms sold in Brittan. The marking thst looks like a 5 that is right before the No.4 Mk1* stamping is a "square S" for Savage.

Is the barrel still in tact? it is is, you could restore it.

BNP is becuse the rifle is to be sold for export from Briton.
2.22" Over all lenght of the cartidge case (less the bullet).
18.5 ton per []" is the standard proof pressure load forthe 303 brit cartidge.

You know it's a US rifle, The serial number is new and made up from the surry company. The savage serial #'s have a number then a "C" prefix in the real serial number ie: 2C45901.

Rear sight looks replaced and the paint finish is a after market job.
