Looking for info on this projectile, more info added

As the title says, looking for info.

Naval gun projectile ,steel penetrator. Never fired . No casing ,the powder charges bags were ajusted for the range to be shot ( full charg, 3/4,1/2 ,1/3 ) on the bottom are there any stamps/markings ? Weight ? Diameter ? Possibly December 1940 .

Projectile is 58 mm wide and 180 mm tall. The markings in the photo I with a 6.Pr in yellow. Under that you have a P, them I.A, C, 12.40. it weighs 5.8 lbs. There are some very small make or inspection marks like 27, 16, 6 and what looks like a A in a circle.

The scoring band (copper band) is not marked, so as noted before, it has not been fired. It seems to be a 6 pounder round but need to do more research.

From what I can find/guess, 6.P (little R) stands for 6 Pounder, assuming the P below it is for Practice. Now to understand the rest.

from the 1926 manual

the following stampings will be found

1. steel maker's code letter and cast number
2. Mark of shell and letter denoting C.R.H
3. Caliber of shell
4. type of projectile e.g S.M.K for Smoke Shell
5. Makers initials of trade mark
6. contract number
7. Lot number
8. Date of completion of manufacture
9. Nature of material of which the projectile is made if not of forged steel

so from that I would say

line 3 - 6 Pounder,
line 4 - practice,
lines 6 and 7, would be the 1 A and C so contractor information (coded)
line 8 - date, December 1940.


I'll see if I have a copy of a newer manual perhaps late 30's.

So no naval anchor stamp so may be not a penetrating but a practice and depending on the type of canon/gun it could have a casing . Still makes a cool door stop ,just dont stub your toes on it !
