i purchased a wooden ammunition crate from a local classified website and am curious if anyone knows or better yet has a pic or link to a pic of what it was used for.

it is about 32" long x 12" wide, 7" tall and is labeled with "ammunition for cannon with explosive projectiles"

the side is labeled "2 shell HE m329 w/suppl chg" and under that it says "fuze pd m51a5.05 sec delay"

followed by "42 inch mortar" and a "loaded 8-53" stamp

it also has "R40FA" printed in multiple spots on the chest.

any info would be greatly appreciated

thanks

It's high explosive shells for the 4.2" Mortar, used in WW2 and Korea. M329 Cartridge is it's official name. Point Detonating Fuze M51A5 is a selective, superquick or 0.05 second delay impact
fuze used to detonate HE ammunition in this and many other projectiles. See TM 43-0001-28. A deep fuze-well in the nose is fitted with a supplementary charge of TNT; this charge is removed to accommodate deep-intrusion proximity fuzes.
