I have been shooting 50 BR with an Anschutz 54 1913 Super Match with a 36X Weaver. I have restocked it with a Don Stith laminate and that has made a world of difference, and I have a Harrel tuner that seems to work. I use Eley Match EPS.

However before I bought it the barrel was shortened for sillouette (it had the sillouette stock on it which I subsequently sold) and the choke is gone. Where I shoot we have very tricky winds. I am told that a barrel replacement with a modern barrrel would help in that regard.

While my scores are improving a target above 2000 is rare for me and the rapidly swithching wind in both directions and velocity appear to be much of the challenge. Yes I do use wind flags and am beginning to read them

My supplier checked with Benchmark (who at this time seem to be producing barrels that are winning lots in unlimted 50BR) and they suggest the 3 groove since it appears to better at wind penetration and it is also easier to chamber. Agreed?

I am being asked what length I want and whether or not it should be moly or stainless. Suggestions?

Do any of you with 50 BR match experience have an opinion on any of these issue.

Thanks for any advice I can get.

Like many situations posed on here you have a number of loaded questions. How does your rifle shoot in no-wind conditions ? If it shoots acceptably well , the answer lies not in a new barrel. If you can't get it to shoot to what your expectation is and you have eliminated all other possibilities, the barrel is the issue.
Even though your wind reading skill is improving, condemning the barrel in favour of a custom may not be the solution as it probably won't compensate for the need to improve your skill further.
The benefit of a custom rimfire barrel is probably only as much as the gunsmith installing it. You will probably want to go with stainless as it's the option of the majority of precision shooters when rebarreling. Bench Rest Central/Rimfire Forum is monitored by many top competitors and smiths and you may also want to pose your inquiries there.

losing the choke in that barrel likely killed it. I don't think it will shoot well at all in any conditions. Read up on rimfire central, and other forums, to see what winning guys are using. some twist rates shooter better in the wind than others. Source what you think is best, to be honest every barrel is a compromise, and none are perfect. Buy one and get shooting. 26-28"s seem to be the winning length. Lots of reasons, most have to do with internal ballistics. Prophet River can import any barrel you like.
