Im looking for a load for my 45-70 lever gun using hodgdon’s clays and tightgroup powder.
Does anyone have any starting points.
I have a bunch of this stuff left over and thought id use it finally.
Phishy...don't do it, case is too large, powder too fast, I don't think Lyman has tested those either, save it for other projects. If you want light loads in the 45/70, the fastest powders that I've tried is Trail Boss, 4759, and AA5744.
Try topping off the powder charge with some dacron (Pillow filler) to keep the powder in place against the primer.
I found I get better ignition and more consistent velocities doing it this way.
