Hello Everyone,

I am new here and in fact new to firearms in general. I have my license for non-restricted and am currently looking for an M1 Garand that is in good working condition... Anyone here able to help me out? I am trying to start a collection of WW2 Era rifles. I just bought a 1950 (slightly past WW2 I understand) Russian SKS.

I have always loved the M1 Garand and would LOVE to own one. I live in Alberta and was hoping someone could help me track one down.

Hi. What's your budget? Think in terms of very close to a grand for a rifle in decent condition. Plus the clips. There's no place for a shop to order 'em from so look at the gun shows too.
Meanwhile go buy a copy of Hatcher's Notebook and Hatcher's Book of the Garand. About $30 each in your local gun shop or Amazon. The Notebook should be required reading for anybody who plays with firearms, but particularly U.S. battle rifles. The latter tells you everything you ever wanted to know about the M1 Rifle, except where to find one. It has a trouble shooting chapter as well.

Thanks for the info, Honestly I expected to see about $1000 tag on it. I would be ok with paying that. Also how does it work in Canada? it is an 8 round clip yet I am pretty sure the law is 5 round max...

Because I read that the 5 round requirement is waived for target shooting purposes, however I read it is NOT waived for hunting... So seemingly if I for some odd reason wanted to hunt with it I would need a 5 round clip or to manual load a single round at a time... or if I could find a 5 round clip for it...

Welcome! I'd recommended signing up for the EE (Equipment Exchange) and start keeping an eye out for a Garand to be posted. $1000 is near the bottom of the current price range for Garands, but it is possible. If you're looking for a shooter, there have been a number of recent 308 Garands built being offered on the EE... price tends to be in the $1200 - $1400+ range.

I applied to be able to see the EE board, I am just awaiting acceptance.

Does anyone know how importing a firearm would work? I found some pretty decent M1's in the USA for right around $1000 Canadian. However I have no idea the process to import a firearm...

I recommend you go to "I run Guns" or "Prophet River" website and search out the procedure for Importation. I used Prophet River (they have a downloadable information pack) last year to import a Remington 1903A3. I couldn't find one of those rifles in Canada for what I thought was a realistic price. The whole procedure went very smoothly and I had the rifle in about 5 weeks from time of purchase. After all the costs were added up I ended up paying 500-800 bucks less than what I would have paid here, If I could find one.

I was in Calgary Shooting Centre on the weekend and they had a couple of Italian-made receiver Garands on the rack. Beautiful condition-but running about $1800 each

I just purchased an Garand with a Danish (Italian) receiver with a criterion barrel and it cost me $1350. and I thought that was a good price. At the Victoria gun show last fall there were 4 or 5 at around $1500.

one last question... why are M1 Garands so dang expensive? they were a very widely mass produced rifle during WW2 and it is not like they were all rounded up and destroyed so only a few are left... I would have thought they would be more in the $400 - $600 range... where are all these guns and why is the price so wild?

Supply and demand. The existing stockpiles in North America have largely dried up, and the demand is fairly high. South of the border, they're considered one of the "mandatory" rifles for collectors.

Up here, the 8 round exemption puts a bit of a premium on demand - it's one of very few semi-auto rifles that you get to go past the 5 round limit with, and other than the "Rare as a unicorn fart" AIA mags for the AIA Enfields (which may or may not fit in the M14), I believe it's the only full powered semi auto rifle that gets past the limit.

Yes, there were millions and millions made. And they used to go for cheap. So like all "once cheap" surplus rifles, most of them got bought up, used up, f@cked up, and modded up by Bubba, thus reducing the supply available to those who want to keep them all original.
