Hi!

I'm looking for a precision iron sight for my M305. I don't particulary like the rear sight... Is there smething more similar to a V-shape rear hunting sight?

So far I only find those one

KNS sight : http://www.knsprecisioninc.com/c/M14M1A.html (front sight only)

XSight : http://www.xssights.com/index.php?nID=sights&cID=Sights&pID=sights&sID=tactical (Did they worth the price?)

Nation Match sight from Smith Enterprise : http://www.smithenterprise.com/products03.01.html (is it really better?)

Is there any other replacement possible? Are they value

Thank You!

ok, to go with a v-type sight you're going to have to get a dovetail machined into the barrel, and possibly a groove for the elevator, unless you just want it to sit in there by spring tension- however, how many years have you spent shooting?- that peep sight is on most military rifles save those of the eastern bloc, and for a very good reason- you can see the entire field of view with it, whereas your rear sight blocks everything but the v and post in your v type sight- properly set up, your sights that come on the m1a/m14 are 1 minute of angle PEEP sights- that means they will group 1 inch at 100 yards, and the rest of the problems with the gun are probably either ammo or operator/movement- now if you "graduate " to national match, you get a THINNER front sight, and a capped rear sight that shrinks that down to a 1/2 inch, which is BETTER than most people can shoot- but QUALITY nmsights are EXPENSIVE as heck, and most of us have chosen to go scope instead, which gives you typically 1/4 minute with MAGNIFICATION- or so the handbook says- i have yet to see one of the chinese shoot 1 inch moa out of the box, it's more like 2, but your manouvre is a GIANT STEP BACKWARDS

Ok! thank you for the advise T-Star.

To awnser you, I'm shooting since I have 8 years old and I have 38... I comming from a hunters familly. But I'm pretty new with Military Guns and semi-auto world.

I already have a scoop for my M14 but I did not have install it (Bushnell 3200 DOA). But I will... I really like shooting with Iron Sight but I don't feel confortable with the one on the M14. The rear hole seem to wide for me. That's why I'm looking for a V-Shape sight or someting easier to align with precision.

I can understand Peep Sight give a good field of view on a battle feild but for now I don't expect shooting a moving target or multiple targets.

But maybe your right and I should not insiste with Iron Sights. I already understand M14 is not a precision riffle...

Thank you.

Best Regards

The M1/M14 backsight is arguably the best military surplus rifle backsight issued. The next best would be the ladder No.4 flip backsight, except it can't be adjusted for windage. The open notch V backsights just aren't in the same class.

The US high power shooters must be doing everything wrong, because as soon as they had to retire the Garands and M14s, they specified the M16A2 needed as "bad" a backsight. The spaceguns immediately outscored all the battle rifles.

If you had a junkable receiver, grind off the ears, true the left sidewall and mount a quarter-minute adjustable sight (ie AJ Parker, Parker Hale, Central or other) and proceed.

If you want to plink, plunk a scope on top or on a foreend rail and carry on.

....

You could always install the National Match back sight elevator. It has a smaller aperature and a tube-shaped hood to hide the hole. The hole itself is drilled fractionally off centre, so the shooter has an intermediate adjustment by turning it 180 degrees between big sight knob come-ups. One trick I saw is the file a V-notch in the rim of the hood, so you don't lose track of ups and downs between clicks. The National Match front sight post is also narrower which makes it easier to centre on the aiming mark.

Since it sounds like you learned to shoot with leaf sights and are now using a peep, are you trying to align the front sight within the rear aperture sight while aiming?

If you are, that is the problem right there. Look through the rear sight and then let it blur out and forget about it. Now focus only on the front sight post and your target.
Align the front sight post with your target, focus your eye back on the sight post, then fire.

Your eye will automatically center everything for you. That's the beauty of an aperture sight, just look through the rear, let it blur out and forget about it.

you must have some wonderfully tolerant game - most of the game out my way gets out of dodge in a big hurry if so much as a branch breaks- there's no TIME to align a v notch, which is why most folks prefer a peep- now , since you figure that the hole on the m14 sight is too big, there's a couple of ways to go- all you need do is replace the rear sight ladder with a blank, and either FILL THE HOLE with something ( maybe a flashover weld or pop rivet, then drill the center with whatever drill you feel comfortable with- get yourself a REPLACEMENT LADDER for this one, so you can go back WHEN YOU REALIZE THAT ISN'T RIGHT EITHER; DO NOT USE A HAND DRILL- use a press to get it centred-
and then you'll have to figure out the width and height of the front sight you want- in short, it's FAR BETTER to leave it as is and LEARN HOW TO SHOOT A PEEP; take a look at the LEVER fans( which normally come with v-notch) and see how MANY have replaced that with a PEEP or ( god forbid on a lever) scope

J996 I think that exactly what I was trying to do... If I understand you correctly, it dosen't really matter if the sights are perfectly align...

I will try to be more patient and try the right technic.

Thank You all!

You can also drill/tap your existing aperture and screw in an aftermarket peep...
R

that's why i suggested a REPLACEMENT ladder- you might NOT like the result- also, there's probably not enough metal in the peep to take a die without breaking- either way, you don't want to violate your only ladder

That's correct.
Once you look through the rear sight you no longer have to worry about it. It should appear as a blurred out ring in your peripheral vision. Focus all your attention on the front sight post.
I know it sounds strange, but the human eye is an amazing optic.

The best iron sight in the world of battle rifles has to be the M1/M14 platform. The NM rear set from Springfield is good but the trick is to find the more precise disc that you have to apply to the reciever's ears. They are hard to come buy. Next for the front sight you will want to find the thinest blade you can get and smoke her right out. When you smoke the front sight there is no glare and alows for more accurate shoots. The KNS front sight with the thinest cross hairs is the best I have tried and excells between 300 to 600 meters. As for the XS sight it is only good up to 100 meters and low light situations. The same idea goes for SEI's tritum sights. Although if Spence is reading this please...
PLEASE!
Hook us up with your whole NM sets that you guys have for sale, rear disc's included!
Now if you like the V shape rear sight and this is for hunting then. Measure the half way point of the rear sight apeture. Make a nice straight line with the dremil and a cut-off wheel. Get a Willaims Fast Fire M1A fiber optic front sight & stock that freazer up! Also please post back pic's so we can all poke fun at Seafury.
:p

I have a new NM rear sight for sale in the EE for 170$. It would need a NM front sight for best results and I can suggest where to get it.

Thank You Satain for the Sights Review. It's really apreciated!

Thank You too Wildphil24 but for the moment, before buying an expensive rear sight I will try the right technic and forget the "blurry" rear sight... Maybe after that!

Best Regards
