Looking For Mechanical Rest For Sighting In Rifle

My goal is to get all five shots on the X and touching.

And to know that the gun is shooting dead on. Anything not dead on was me.

You may be shooting as well as you equipment will let you. What make and model is your rifle and what caliber? What make, model & power is your scope? Is the ammo factory or handloads and have you tried different loads? How many shots do you fire in each group and what is your group size? What type of rest (front & back) do you use now?

Two rifles.

Winchester Mod 70 Stealth, 22-250
Savage 10 FPLE 2B, 308.

Both factory ammo. Reloading project is third inline right now.

Have a bag that I bought from "that guy in Calgary" Forget the name and threw the box out. Its a sand bag style about 10" long. Has dog ears on top for rifle to sit in a groove. Also have bi pods, but haven't used much lately.

Shot the 308 at the last Summerland shoot. Was able to semi consistantly hit a plastic milk jug sized object at around 1,035 yards with factory ammo. Different brands and grains of bullets.

What I want (point of a mechanical rest) is to take all movement out of the rifle. Use the knobs on rest to align cross hairs on X. Squeeze trigger. Adjust target turrets accordingly.

Mod 70 scope is a Zeis Conquest, 6X24.
10FP is a Leupold MK 4, 4.5X14.

Max,
You're not going to find a mechanical rifle rest similiar to the Ransom pistol rest. The one you posted a link for will jump from recoil every shot and you'll have to readjust your rifle each time, just the same as if you were setting it on a regular front rest and rear bag. If your shooting to 100yds or more, wind will be a factor in group size.
I've seen some of these types of custom made, mechanical rifle rests setup in wind tunnel experiments, but most of them are barreled actions clamped into the devise, not a stocked, hunting rifle. The variations of different stocks makes it difficult to clamp them in solid. As with the pistol Ransom rest, pistol grips are removed and inserts placed to grip the gun very tightly.
MY advise is to get a good front rest and rear bag and practise sighting in with that on windless days.

Max,
You are flat barking up the wrong tree. It is highly unlikey you can set a practical field rifle up in any sort of mechanical rest and be certain any dispersion is not the result of a flaw in the setup. Just as you cannot be certain it is not from a puff of wind, a shift in the scope, or the accuracy level of the ammunition. As I said before, I know I can outshoot the mechanical rests I have seen so they are, in my opinion, flawed.
You don't know the rifle is "dead on". You know it sometimes hits where you want and sometimes does not and want to assume it does not because of your technique. This may be so but attempting to eliminate yourself as part of the equation raises as many questions as it answers. Nonetheless, if it will make you happy, fly at it and let us know how it works out. Regards, Bill.

just completely ignore Google I guess? seriously, there are tons of setups out there, easily found. you are basically looking to sled your gun. so start looking at those kinds of setups. Phone Sinclair Int and talk to their people, they'll likely have all the info you need. Try 6br.com or any of the other benchrest sites.

Thanx guys.

I am/was hoping that the rest would eliminate movement. I don't mind re setting up after each shot.
On a concrete type solid benchrest I can get zero movement with a quality Hart pedestal and Bald Eagle rear & front bags. Have you tried that combo yet before you start spending money on contraptions that probably will disappoint you?

Rail guns have been around a long time, but many a BR shooter have beaten or equalled it in steadiness.

In any case, it would be cool if you find the Holy Grail of mechanical rests. Please report back. I'd be interested in your results.

I just found this post.
Can someone please recommend a quality front and rear bag set for use without a front stand. I would like a quality set of bags.

What do you recommend filling the bags with?
