looking for an inexpensive 1st pistol that i can shoot for cheep but dont want a 22 cal. I was thinking about a 7.62x25mm Tokarev
any ideas. and what are the rules for bringing handguns to canada from the states
thanks

There's no 7.62x25 anywhere that I've seen lately, so that might not be a good choice. I'd love one too, but have held off for this reason.

if you want inexpensive to buy, you probably want inexpensive to shoot too so 9mm is your best bet. I'm really happy with my norinco m213 tokarev clone, and 9m is $14/box around here, so a day at the range isn't too brutal on the wallet. you see 213's every so often at similar prices to the real Tok's from dealers.

Usa has pretty stringent export restrictions. there are a few outfits that will export for you but at considerable expense. If you're looking for a budget gun, you probably won't want to pay the fee. Questar and Dave's links up top both offer this service.

Good luck

mill arm here in edmonton list that they have a few
do You think they would be a good choice
TOKAREV TT33 B705 7.62 X 25 NEW $299.00

9mm is gonna be your best bet if you don't want a .22
How much are you willing to spend?
A decent 9mm will run you between 500-1000 depending on what you like.
I'd suggest you do a little research on the forum as this questions is asked just about every week. check out some of the responses there.
I'd say grab a glock. Simple, fun too shoot, loads of after market parts and a used one can be had for as little as 500$

If you get the 7.62x25 Tokarev you can easily convert it to fire 9x19 Luger and 38 Super, 9mm Largo, and 9x23 Winchester. Just get a few extra 9x19 barrels and barrel bushings. Change out the 7.62 barrel and bushing for the 9mm Barrel and bushing. Ream out another 9mm barrel to chamber the 9x23 Winchester and you are good to go. I did it myself with just a few twist drills.
This way you get what is basically 3 different pistols on one frame. And you are not limited by the availability of the 7.62x25 ammo.

As a new shooter buy something local in Canada either new or used. And get something in 9mm. Aside from .22 it is the cheapest ammo you can get which is has a reliable availability.

But "cheap" and "guns" do not really belong in the same sentance if you're not talking about .22's. However it's no more expensive than a lot of sports and cheaper than many.

Mastiff, the Tokarev must be the most versatile pistol I know of, but I am most likely biased. I own other pistols including two Glocks but it is my Norinco Tokarev Model 54 that I shoot almost exclusively and I shoot this pistol better than any other type.

Spend a few dollars more and get either the NOrinco clone of the CZ or Sig 226. Both are excellent starter guns in a caliber that is relatively inexpensive to shoot. When you decide to upgrade your pistol you will get most if not all of your money back when you go to sell the gun.

Take Care

I would agree with that. THe cost of Tok ammo and its availability can vary. 9 mm is pretty common and outside of 22 is realatively cheap. Plus you can save your braqss and reload.

IMO get a Beretta 92/M9, a Sig P226 or 2022, or CZ 75b. These are excellent high quality pistols in 9mm, probably the best of their breed. Of course there are going to be lots of people with different opinions and tastes (some like OD poly frame guns O.O) but I think it will be hard to knock any of these guns, all have very high quality feel and parts and will have good resale value, and they all shoot awesome.

Importing from the USA will require you to retain the services of some kind of exporter to do so because you can't take possession of a gun in the USA at all if you are a non resident without permits, its a felony. There are various agents that have offices on both sides of the border who can conduct a transfer like this, but they need to file federal paperwork etc and its not 100% guaranteed that they can export it. If you want the gun fast or cheap, obviously don't even think about this.
